St. John’s Sweeps Marquette in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals, 4-0

The Red Storm will face the winner of Creighton and Butler in tomorrow’s semifinals
CAYCE, S.C. – The top-seeded St. John's men's tennis team swept eighth-seeded Marquette, 4-0, in the Quarterfinals of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP.
The Johnnies won the first two doubles matches to claim the team point and took three singles matches to finish off their second sweep over the Golden Eagles this season. With the win, the Red Storm reached the 20-win mark for the second-straight year improving to 20-4 on the campaign.
The Red Storm will advance to tomorrow's semifinals to face the winner of fourth-seeded Creighton and fifth-seeded Butler at 12:45 p.m. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
To start off the match, St. John's cruised through doubles competition to go up a point early. Martin Bugaj and Armando Santelotallied as a win on the no. 2 court over Marquette's Jan Jauch and Jaasper Schaadt, 6-4. Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda recorded the second victory moving past Ivan Vasquez and Teddy Wong, 6-2.
After a lengthy weather delay that postponed competition until around 2:30 p.m., the Johnnies picked up where they left off dominating in singles play, winning all three completed matches in straight sets. Carl Gustavsson picked up a win in the no. 2 slot over Tin Krstulovic, Francisco Bascon swept Jauch, 6-3, 6-1 in his first-ever BIG EAST Tournament singles match. Kaneda logged his team-leading 18th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Nathan Bathalzor.
The defending tournament champions will look to advance into the BIG EAST title match for the fourth-straight time tomorrow afternoon.
