PALM BEACH, Fla.– The St. John's men's golf team logged a runner-up finish at the Southern Invitational, its best of the 2023-24 season on Tuesday.
Fueled by the team's lowest scoring round this season of 8-under over the first 18 holes on Monday morning, the Red Storm finished with a three-round team score of 5-under, 847. The team score was the lowest by the Johnnies this season.
Florida Atlantic took the team title after firing off a 29-under, 823, and shot 15-under as a team on Tuesday. The Owls Max Sturdza carded a 16-under, 197, to take home the individual title.
Peicheng Chen went under par in all three rounds to tally a second-place finish at the Falls Club. The junior shot 8-under, 205, his best mark of the season and record 14 birdies and an eagle along the way. The Beijing, China native shot 2-under, 69, in Tuesday's final 18 holes.
After shooting the lowest single-round score by a freshman in program history during Monday's first round, Thomas Finn recorded the best finish of his budding college career checking in at the fourth place. The rookie shot a season-low 3-under, 210, over the three rounds in Palm Beach and flushed 13 birdie putts.
Ryan Rittberger had a strong day during Tuesday's third round posting a personal event low even par, 71 tallying four-straight birdies. The graduate student ended the tournament tied for 18th place.
David Mlynek recorded a top-15 finish coming into the clubhouse with a final scorecard of 4-over, 217.
The Red Storm will look to carry the momentum when its back in action for the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club on April 15-16.
