CAYCE, S.C.– For the fifth-straight tournament, the top-seeded St. John's men's tennis team has advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship after outlasting Butler, 4-3, on Saturday.
In a marathon match the Red Storm bested the Bulldogs in a contest that went down to the wire in the semifinal at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in South Carolina.
The Johnnies will now head to the title match tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to meet second-seeded DePaul. The final will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The two squads have faced off for the conference crown for the fourth time in the last five years. St. John's is seeking its sixth BIG EAST title in the last 10 years and its second-straight.
In partner play, Carl Gustavsson and Francisco Bascon tallied a 6-3 victory over the Bulldogs' Patrick Joss and Borja Miralles. Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves clinched the point for the Red Storm after cruising past Nicolas Arts and Aidan William, 6-4.
In singles competition the two sides went back-and-forth in a rematch of last year's BIG EAST Tournament title match. After getting blanked in the opening set, Armando Sotelo rallied back with vengeance to claim a 0-6, 6-3, 6-0 over William on the No. 6 court.
Danilo Raicevic cruised through his contest sweeping Arts in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3.
With a spot in the title match on the line and score tied, 3-3. Gustavsson mounted a heroic comeback after falling in opening set. The 2023 All-BIG EAST selection emerged over Miralles on the no. 3 court in a three-set marathon match, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to send the Johnnies to the next round.
With the win the Red Storm advanced to 21-4 on the year and will look to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
