Francisco Bascon won two matches for the Red Storm
CAYCE, S.C – The No. 1 St. John's men's tennis team fell to No. 2 DePaul on Monday in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Match, 4-2.
The Johnnies, participating in their fifth straight BIG EAST Championship match, won the first two doubles matches to claim the team point but dropped four of the first five singles contests, allowing DePaul to emerge victorious at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves kicked off doubles play with a 6-2 effort at No. 3 against Vito Tonejc and Antonio Iaquinto. The team point was clinched at No. 1 when Carl Gustavsson and Francisco Bascon took down Shourya Verma and Jona Gitschel, 6-3.
The Blue Demons tied the match at 1-1 on the No. 6 singles court, earning a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory. DePaul took a 2-1 after a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and made it 3-1 after a three-set triumph on the No. 5 singles court, 6-3, 0-6, 6-0.
Bascon gave the Red Storm its second point of the morning, defeating Iaquinto in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, on the No. 3 court.
DePaul clinched the championship at No. 4, winning a three-set thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
