Joe Tartamella to be Inducted into Smithtown High School Hall of Fame

Tartamella will be honored on May 11 at Smithtown Landing Country Club
SMITHTOWN, N.Y.– St. John's Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella will be inducted into the Smithtown High School Athletics Booster Club Hall of Fame in May.
Tartamella, a 1997 graduate of Smithtown High School will be enshrined for his decorated athletic career and at a ceremony on May 11 at Smithtown Landing Country Club at 9 a.m.
The St. James, N.Y., native will be recognized for his accomplishments as a baseball and basketball standout during his time at Smithtown High School from 1992-1997.
On the hardwood, Tartamella led the Bulls as a point guard and had his most decorated campaign as a senior during the 1996-97 season. The team captain guided the squad to the NYSPHSAA Section XI Playoffs to compete amongst the best schools on Long Island. Following the season, the team's assists leader was tabbed an all-league selection.
Beginning his tenure as a graduate assistant in 2002, Tartamella has spent 21 years as a part of the women's basketball program and has been a part of eight of the team's 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Tartamella rose through the ranks as a graduate assistant (2002-04), assistant coach (2005-08) and finally an associate head coach (2008-11) before taking over the helm.
On April 27, 2012, Tartamella was elevated and named the ninth head coach in the history of the program after helping direct the squad to its first-ever Sweet 16 appearances.
In 12 years as a head coach, the Long Island resident has compiled an overall record of 220-154 and is on the verge of clinching his ninth winning season. The Johnnies lead man has guided the squad to four NCAA Tournaments, eight postseason appearances and nine top-five finishes in the BIG EAST. During his tenure, he has mentored 18 All-BIG EAST selections.
In 2016, Tartamella and the Red Storm captured the BIG EAST Tournament title, the program's first in 28 years downing Creighton in the title game.
Last season, Tartamella and his staff engineered an incredible turnaround starting the 2022-23 campaign at a program-record, 13-0 and were ranked in the Associated Press top-25 for the first time in seven years. St. John's finished with a 23-9 record, returned to the NCAA Tournament and recorded a 66-64 victory in the "Big Dance" over Purdue.
Tartamella was named the 2023 BIG EAST Coach of the Year and a Naismith National Coach of the Year Award Semifinalist in recognition of the impressive campaign.
This year, he guided the Johnnies to a third-place finish in conference and earned a postseason win for the second-straight year advancing to the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament Second Round.
Tartamella joins an accomplished group to be enshrined in Smithtown's Hall of Fame that includes- nine-time pro lacrosse All-Star Rob Pannell, three-timer winter Olympian John Daly and former major league baseball players- John Curtis, Jim Mecir and Frank Catalanotto. He will also join his sister, Lauren Tartamella, a basketball standout who was inducted in 2008.
