Kelly becomes the second player in program history to earn the distinction
LOUISVILLE, KY. (April 3, 2024) – After a four-goal, five-point performance to help the St. John's lacrosse team rally from down 5-0 to beat Marquette, 13-9, on Saturday, junior attackman Brian Kelly has been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division I National Team of the Week.
Kelly becomes the first Red Storm player to be recognized as one of the top players across the country since Mike Madsen earned the distinction on Feb. 15, 2021, following his overtime game-winner 1:29 into overtime to down Hofstra.
Down 5-0 late in the first quarter, Kelly ignited a furious Johnnies' comeback on Saturday, scoring three straight goals to jumpstart a 9-1. Kelly's heroics helped the Red Storm earn its largest comeback victory since March 23, 2019, and its first conference win since 2016.
The Red Hook, N.Y., native was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for his performance over the weekend. The three-year letterwinner leads the Red Storm this season in goals (23), assists (13) and points (36). Kelly's five points against Marquette gave him 128 points in his career, moving him into sole possession of ninth place on the program's all-time points list. The first-year captain has an active 10-game point streak and has recorded at least four points in seven games this season.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday night when it visits No. 10/8 Denver. Faceoff from Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET.
