The Red Storm records its first home win over the Huskies since 2012
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (20-16, 9-4) extended its longest winning streak of the season to five games by taking down UConn, 4-1, in the series opener on Friday.
The home victory against the Huskies marked the Red Storm's first since the 2012 season. St. John's has now held its opponents to just one run over the five-game win streak, lowering the team ERA to just a 2.31 mark.
Ana Serafinko picked up her seventh win inside of the circle this afternoon. The left-hander allowed just one run on five hits while punching out 10 across the full seven innings. Serafinko now has a 1.79 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 70.1 innings this season.
Catcher Celia Macari blasted her first home run of the year in the first inning. The graduate student provided the Johnnies an early advantage after smacking the three-run homer off the left-field scoreboard.
Junior London Jarrard launched her team-leading sixth longball of the season in the contest. The shortstop tacked on a crucial insurance run with a solo shot to deep right-center in the bottom of the sixth.
Serafinko set the tone early in the top of the first, sitting down the Huskies (19-17, 7-3) in order with two strikeouts.
The Red Storm offense supplied Serafinko with an early lead in the top of the first. Jess Bianco led off by battling through a 10-pitch at-bat, drawing a walk and then swiping her 20th bag of the season to give St. John's an early runner in scoring position. Cassidy Stouffer then blooped a one-out single into left field to put two on. An out later, Macari delivered a three-run home run off the scoreboard to give the Johnnies the 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Serafinko stuck out her third batter to kick off the frame before Jana Sanden hit a double into right-center. The Chino Hills, Calif., product was left unphased in the circle, stranding the runner on second by recording two more punchouts and holding the St. John's 3-0 advantage.
UConn's Payton Kinney settled down in the circle after a rocky first. Kinney and Serafinko went back and forth, exchanging blank half-innings to keep the score locked at 3-0 until the top of the sixth inning.
The Huskies cracked the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when Grace Jenkins hit a one-out solo home run to center field, cutting into the Johnnies' lead, 3-1. UConn threatened for more when Lexi Hastings hit a bloop single down the left-field line and advanced to second on a collision. Serafinko once again navigated her way out of the inning, striking out the next two batters and preventing any further damage.
Jarrard did not waste any time responding on behalf of the Red Storm, leading off the bottom half with a solo shot into deep right center, 4-1.
Serafinko then closed out her fourth complete game of the season, working around a two-out walk to seal St. John's 4-1 opening-series win against UConn.
The Red Storm and Huskies will continue their three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Red Storm Field.
