Kelly was named to the first team; Seel garners second team nod
Brian Kelly and Bobby Seel of the St. John's lacrosse program were named All-BIG EAST selections by the conference office on Wednesday. Kelly earned first-team honors, while Seel was tabbed to the second team.
Both junior attackmen eclipsed the 40-point mark this season to earn the All-BIG EAST nod for the first time in their careers, helping guide Red Storm to its best record since 2019.
Kelly led St. John's with 29 goals and 44 points for his third consecutive season surpassing the 40-point mark. The junior added 15 assists and recorded multiple points in 11 games. The Red Hook, N.Y., native picked up six points against Hofstra on Feb. 13 on five goals and a helper and had five-point performances in the Red Storm's victories against Queens on Feb. 28 and on March 30 against Marquette.
Named a team captain for the first time in 2024, Kelly turned in eight four-point performances and his 44 points matched his career-high in a season. His 1.93 goals per game were seventh best in the conference and his 2.93 points per contest ranked eighth in the BIG EAST.
Kelly was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and was selected to the USILA Division I National Team of the Week following his four-goal, one-assist effort against Marquette, helping the Johnnies win their first BIG EAST contest since 2016.
The three-year letterwinner now has 136 points in his career, placing him in seventh place on the program's all-time career points list. Kelly is the second Red Storm player since reinstatement in 2005 to reach 40 points in each of his first three seasons.
After finishing 2023 with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists, Seel burst onto the scene this season, finishing with 41 points on 25 goals and a team-best 16 assists.
The Garden City, N.Y., product recorded at least one point in all 15 games for the Red Storm this season, finding the back of the net in 14 of them. Seel racked up multiple points in 12 games, including a career-best six points on four goals and two assists in the Red Storm's 13-6 triumph over Binghamton on March 9. Seel was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 11 for his performance against the Bearcats. A capable facilitator, Seel dished out a career-best four helpers on April 20 at No.11/11 Georgetown.
During BIG EAST play, the junior ranked fifth in the conference in assists per game tallying 1.4 per outing and 10th in points per contest with 2.6.
Kelly becomes the eighth St. John's player to be named to the first team since the league's introduction of the sport in 2010 and the first since Eric DeJohn earned first-team honors in 2016. This is the ninth year since 2010 the Red Storm has had multiple representatives on the all-conference teams.
