The Red Storm end the 2024 season with its third-highest win total in program history
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's softball team fell to third-seeded Creighton, 2-1, to be eliminated from the 2024 BIG EAST Softball Championships on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm (31-27, 13-11 BIG EAST) finish the 2024 campaign with its third-highest win total in program history, just one behind the record of 32 wins that was achieved in both the 1990 and 2017 seasons.
London Jarrard provided the Red Storm with its lone run of the contest, blasting her 11th home run over the center field wall in the third inning. The unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection finishes her junior season with a .324 average and a single-season program record of 51 RBIs.
Starter Ana Serafinko continued her strong tournament stretch inside the circle, allowing just two earned runs while striking out eight batters in the full seven innings. The sophomore had a breakout campaign in 2024, notching a team-best 2.38 ERA and 174 punchouts in 150 innings.
Jess Bianco chipped in two hits to help pace the offense against the Bluejays. The Cherry Hill, N.J. product completes the season with a team-best .352 batting average.
Serafinko started the game perfectly inside the circle, sitting down the first six batters she faced while punching out three to keep the game scoreless after two and a half innings of play.
The Red Storm threatened to plate the first run of the game in the home half of the second, loading the bases behind an Amy Mallah walk and a pair of infield singles by Cassidy Stouffer and London Slade. However, Natalia Puchino recorded the third out to leave the frame unscathed, 0-0.
Serafinko then tossed her third scoreless frame to open the contest before Jarrard supplied the Red Storm with its first run, crushing a solo home run over the wall in center field, 1-0.
After a scoreless fourth, Creighton took the lead in the top of the fifth behind a pair of RBI singles by Lily West and Madeline Vejvoda, 2-1.
The Johnnies' looked to knot the game on a potential Sydney Totarsky RBI single after Jarrard and Serafinko put together a pair of base hits ahead of it, but a video review deemed that a runner left early and the at-bat was erased, keeping the score at 2-1 in favor of Creighton.
On the rubber, Serafinko tossed a 1-2-3 sixth and seventh with a pair of punchouts to hold the Bluejays' advantage to just one run, giving the Red Storm an opportunity to make a late-inning comeback.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Storm came up short, falling to Creighton, 2-1, ending the 2024 season.
