The NCAA announced the latest academic progress rating on Tuesday
QUEENS, N.Y.- Eight of St. John's 17 athletic programs earned a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) as the NCAA released its academic success measurement for the 2022-23 academic year on Tuesday.
The men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, men's fencing, women's fencing, women's soccer, women's tennis and volleyball teams all received a perfect mark of 1,000. Eight other programs notched a rating of 960 or above.
The volleyball and both fencing programs have logged a perfect rate in each of the last five qualifying academic years.
The APR was created to better track a real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates offer. The mark is a team-based metric in which scholarship student-athletes at NCAA Division I institutions earn one point a semester for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
Each NCAA Division I sports team submits data to have its Academic Progress Rate calculated each academic year. The NCAA reports both single-year and four-year rates, on which penalties for poor academic performance are based. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable, member-provided data. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition are available online through the NCAA's searchable database.
