Seven student-athletes were honored as scholar-athletes
TEMPE, Ariz. – The St. John's men's tennis program has garnered recognition as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, the organization announced on Monday.
Additionally, seven members of the team were named ITA Scholar Athletes. Adam Groves, Danilo Raicevic, Francisco Bascon, Ignacio Vinas, Marco Cinotti, Martin Bugaj and Ryota Kaneda all earned the distinction.
"I'm extremely proud of the young men on my team that are able to balance a Division I sport while succeeding in the classroom," said Head Coach Dillon Pottish. "They put a lot of work into both. Many thanks have to go to Ray Howell and his staff as well."
To earn the ITA All-Academic Team Award, a program must record a team cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. A student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA to receive the individual accolade.
As a team, the Red Storm posted a 3.53 cumulative mark for the entire 2023-24 academic year. On the court, the Johnnies won 21 matches and advanced to the BIG EAST Title Match for the fifth consecutive tournament. The 21 victories are the most the program has won in a season since winning 21 contests in 2016.
Over 1,000 Division I student-athletes were named ITA scholar-athletes and 176 programs received All-Academic Team distinctions.
