Senior midfielder Miguel Diaz scores Johnnies’ first goal of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Miguel Diaz netted the St. John's men's soccer team's first tally of the 2024 campaign in a 1-1 draw against Stony Brook at Belson Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Red Storm's lone goal scorer was one of four Johnnies to register three or more shots in the contest, delivering a tally on his only chance on frame. Fellow classmate Macoumba Ba and freshman Mateusz Marciniak each launched three shots while Eric Danquah led the way with four chances of his own.
St. John's (0-1-1) produced 16 shots in total while Stony Brook (0-1-1) managed just nine of its own. The Red Storm also logged four corners in the contest.
Diaz registered a seventh-minute strike to put the Red Storm ahead early. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native broke free into open space and out-hustled Stony Brook's Lorenzo Selini down the right side. Diaz cut inside and beat the keeper on the near post from just outside the six-yard box for a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, St. John's tried to weather the Seawolves' chances deep in its defensive zone. The Johnnies blocked an initial shot from Alex Fleury before Jonas Bickus reeled in a pass from Selini and powered a deflected shot into the back of the net to deadlock the game at one.
St. John's quickly tried to return the favor with pressure over the next five minutes, including a prime chance from Ba from just outside the 18-yard box that sailed just over the crossbar. Diaz nearly struck again, streaking down the right side and nearly placing an identical shot on the near post but missing wide.
Both teams went back and forth over the next 15 minutes with neither team producing a high-danger opportunity and entering halftime tied at one.
Marciniak, who made his collegiate debut on Sunday, gave the Red Storm its best chance through the first 15 minutes of the second half. Julian Jakopovic laced a corner set piece into the box, seeing Antonio Biggs place a headed pass to a cutting Marciniak at the near post, who missed just wide on the right side.
The Johnnies continue to pester the Seawolves' back line over the next 15 minutes, seeing several crosses inside the 18-yard box turned away by Stony Brook.
However, the Seawolves produced its top opportunity in the second stanza with a chance from Bas Beckhoven. The midfielder found open terrain on the left side, trying to dangle around the Red Storm's Alec McLachlan, but the junior netminder held strong and made a one-handed stop diving to his right at the near post in the 74th minute.
Both squads exchanged opportunities down the stretch but neither capitalized on its chances to end in a 1-1 draw.
St. John's will remain in Queens to square off with Manhattan on Thursday. Kickoff from Belson Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on FloFC.
