Red Storm to face Niagara, Northeastern and Coppin State in opening home tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will kick off its 2024 season this weekend when it hosts the Red Storm Invitational inside Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y.
The Red Storm will begin its season on Friday, Aug. 30, when it hosts Niagara at 1 p.m. and Northeastern at 7 p.m. The Johnnies will then square off against Coppin State the next day at 1 p.m. to close out the invitational. All three of the Red Storm's matches will be streamed on FloSports and live stats for all matches will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's will face off against both Niagara and Northeastern for the third time in program history. The program will meet with Coppin State for the fourth time in the all-time series. In all three previous meetings with the Eagles, the Johnnies have never surrendered a set.
On Friday, the Red Storm will open its season at home for the first time since the 2018 season when it takes on Niagara. Additionally, the program will open its home slate against the Purple Eagles for the second time in program history. In 2016, St. John's bested Niagara, 3-1, inside Carnesecca Arena behind a career-high 51 assists from Erica Di Maulo.
2023 BIG EAST and AVCA East Coast Region Coach of the Year Joanne Persico returns to lead the Johnnies for the program's 31st season. Last year, the Red Storm finished 23-11 and 13-5 in conference, which was good enough for third in the league. The Johnnies' 23 wins were the most since the program went 33-4 in 2007.
The Red Storm showed out in the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament, taking down Villanova, 3-0, and Marquette, 3-2, en route to its third BIG EAST title match. The squad was also selected to its second consecutive NIVC Tournament as a host school, making it to the second round of the postseason championship.
In the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Red Storm were predicted to finish third (80), following reigning BIG EAST Champions Creighton (100) and Marquette (91). Erin Jones and Lucrezia Lodi were both named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, marking the 12th straight season that the Johnnies have had at least one student-athlete given preseason conference honors.
Jones burst onto the scene last season as a sophomore, leading the Johnnies in points (508), kills (446) and kills per set (3.48 K/S). In league play, Jones finished third in the conference in total kills and fourth in K/S and points. The talented right-side also tallied 12 double-doubles and earned the first triple-double in program history with 22 kills, 17 digs and 14 assists in the Red Storm's 3-2 win over Marquette on Oct. 12.
At the conclusion of the campaign, the Albuquerque, N.M., product was named to the All-BIG EAST Team as a unanimous selection, as well as the AVCA East Coast All-Region Team.
Lodi was tabbed to the 2023 All-BIG EAST Team alongside Jones after dominating in league play. After returning from injury, the San Lazzaro di Savena, Italy native made 17 starts across 18 matches and averaged 3.34 points per set, 2.97 kills per set and 1.97 digs per set, which was the second-best on the team. The outside hitter totaled 246 kills, 164 digs, 19 aces and 281 points across her sophomore season.
Niagara finished with a 13-14 overall record and a 12-6 mark in MAAC play in 2023. The Purple Eagles were selected to finish fifth in the 2024 MAAC Preseason Poll. Middle blocker Laryssa Imbuzeiro was the only member of the Purple Eagles to be selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. A 2023 All-MAAC Second Team selection, Imbuzeiro totaled a career-high 129 blocks and 135 kills at a .245 hitting percentage.
Northeastern ended the 2023 season with an 11-14 record and a 9-9 mark for sixth in the CAA. The program was picked to finish in the same spot in its preseason poll. Northeastern returned five athletes from the 2023 campaign and added nine newcomers, highlighted by two-time All-Southern Team selection and Wofford transfer Millie Loehr.
Coppin State heads into 2023 following its best finish in program history at 27-5. The Eagles were superb in MEAC play, going 13-1 and winning their first conference championship in program history. Coppin State was picked second in the conference's preseason poll and returns Preseason All-MEAC Team member TaKenya Stafford and 2023 All-MEAC Freshman Team selection Coco Figueroa for the 2024 season.
