St. John’s Attack Erupts to Blow Past Cornell, 4-1

The Red Storm go off for a season-high four goals over just 35:52
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's attack exploded on Thursday night as the Red Storm recorded a season-high four goals over just 35:52 to blow past Cornell, 4-1.
The Red Storm flourished from the jump scoring three goals in the opening 45 minutes on just five shots and never looked back. The Johnnies converted on 50 percent of its shot attempts as four different players recorded a goal, which is the most since six found the back of the net in a 6-1 win over UAlbany on Feb. 21, 2021.
The Red Storm came into the match with 14 points on year and tied its season total through just 55 minutes of action on Thursday night, accumulating 14 points on four goals and six assists.
Jordyn Levy scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year to start off the scoring eruption for the Johnnies. Lauryn Tran registered her second game-winner of the 2024 campaign. Juliana Dane put home a rebound for her first career goal and Jailene DeJesus extended the lead in the latter half with a tally in the 55th minute.
Athina Sofroniou added a career-high two assists in just a 3:25 span. Dane, DeJesus, Molly McGlame and Madison Mariani additionally recorded helpers for the Johnnies at Belson Stadium. For Dane, McGlame and Mariani it marked the first assists of their respective collegiate careers.
St. John's (4-1-2) outshot Cornell, 8-7. DeJesus produced a game-high three shots all on target.
Malene Nielsen held the Big Red scoreless for the final 45 minutes and dropped her goals against average to 0.36 on the year. The Louisville transfer (3) and teammate Kayla Bower (2) combined for saves on the evening.
Tran had the first opportunity of the night as the field was switched as Janelle Sylvestre found Levy midfield, who distributed to a waiting Tran, who possessed the ball and set up for a strike on frame launching one into the hands of Cornell goalkeeper Natalie Medugno in the ninth minute.
After St. John's earned a free-kick jut over the midfield line, Sofroniou played a beautiful ball into the edge of the six-yard box. Levy soared into the air and directed a header into the left the side of the twine for the opening goal in the 20th minute.
Just 3:25 later, St. John's built from the back as Sofroniou possessed the ball and played it forward to DeJesus. The midfielder played a through-ball to a streaking Tran who veered around the goaltender and tucked one home to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. The senior's goal marked her first since six minutes into the season opener against Colgate on Aug. 18.
Shortly after in the 30th minute, Cornell (1-2-3) tightened the scoreline chopping the deficit in half as Laken Gallman netted a blast off a feed from Abigail Bishara, 2-1.
Mariani dusted a defender with a cutting move to get into the right-side of the box and fired a centering cross. McGlame got the first touch on it bouncing off a Big Red defender and onto a silver platter for Dane who leveled a strike into the center of the net to make it, 3-1.
In the opening 45 minutes, the Red Storm recorded three goals on five shooting at a 60 percent clip. The three tallies came over just 21:03.
In the latter half, the Red Storm continued to create opportunities as Sylvestre logged the first strike of the second stanza.
In the 55th minute, Dane controlled possession and played a long through pass to DeJesus. The winger outpaced the Big Red defense and had only the goalie to beat, cutting to the right and striking one in to bring the Johnnies' advantage to three, 4-1.
In the 69th minute, Nielsen made a diving stop on a bouncing shot to keep the advantage at three. The Red Storm controlled the rest of the way to see through a dominant win over Cornell.
The Johnnies conclude their four-match homestand with a 3-0-1 record and remain unbeaten at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm will close its non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon with another Ivy League opponent when it travels to Penn for a 2 p.m. contest on ESPN+.
