St. John’s Heads Back on the Road to Face Penn

Red Storm look to build off 4-1 victory over Cornell
QUEENS, N.Y.– Following a four-game homestand where the St. John's women's soccer went 3-0-1, the squad will be back on the road on Sunday to face Penn.
The Johnnies' non-conference finale from Rhodes Field in Philadelphia will kick-off at 2 p.m. on ESPN+ with Dan Fritz on the call.
The Red Storm head into the contest with a 4-1-2 record and put forth its best offensive output of the season its last time out. On Thursday night, St. John's breezed past Cornell, 4-1, tallying four goals over 35:52 at Belson Stadium.
St. John's saw four different players find the back of the net and recorded six assists, which both marked program high's since it defeated UAlbany, 6-1, on Feb. 21, 2021.
The Red Storm flourished from the jump scoring three goals in the opening 45 minutes on just five shots and never looked back. The Johnnies converted on 50 percent of its eight shot attempts, putting seven on frame.
Jordyn Levy, Lauryn Tran, Juliana Dane and Jailene DeJesus all logged goals in the dominating win at Belson Stadium. For Levy, it marked her team-high fourth goal of the season and third in the last four contests. The senior forward ranks third in the BIG EAST in total goals. Tran tallied her second game-winner of the year while Dane's score marked the first of her career.
The Johnnies registered six total assists on Thursday night from five different players. Athina Sofroniou led the charge with a career-high two helpers while Dane, DeJesus, Madison Mariani and Molly McGlame all stamped one assist each. Sofroniou matches BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection Janelle Sylvestre for the team lead in helpers.
On the other side of the pitch, the Red Storm continue to be strong defensively conceding just three goals over seven matches. The squad holds a goals against average of 0.43, which ranks 20th in the nation. Goalkeeper Malene Nielsen boasts a 90.9 save percentage, which ranks 16th in NCAA Division I. The Johnnies have four shutouts on the year.
The Red Storm and Quakers will square off for the third time in the history of the two programs and the second-straight. The all-time series is split, 1-1. Last year, Jessica Garziano's 35th minute game-winner assisted by Nicole Gordon propelled St. John's past Penn, 1-0, on Aug. 31, 2023. Prior to that, the two sides hadn't met for 23 years since the 2000 ECAC Playoffs.
Penn enters the matchup still seeking its first win with a 0-3-4 record on the season. Sunday will mark only the second home game of the Quakers season, they drew Towson on Sept. 8, 1-1. In its last contest, Penn took an early lead after a tally from Isabella Zulli in the third minute at Navy but eventually fell after the Mids converted an 84th minute game-winner, 2-1, on Thursday.
Abbey Cook and Mila Matby lead the charge offensively for the Quakers each recording a goal and assist on the season. Leah Finkelman ranks first on the squad with eight shots and Annabel Austen has played all 630 minutes in goal thus far.
Sunday's match marks the final non-conference tilt of the 2024 season. St. John's will open its BIG EAST slate against UConn on Sept. 22 at Belson Stadium.
