Red Storm to face Princeton, Duke and No. 3 Penn State in final road tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a straight-set victory over NJIT, 3-0, on Tuesday, the St. John's volleyball team will travel to the Penn State Invitational this weekend in University Park, Pa.
The Red Storm will kick off the invitational on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. when it squares off against Princeton. The following day, the Johnnies will battle with Duke at 12:30 p.m. and No. 3 Penn State at 6:30 p.m. to close out the tournament. All three matches will be streamed on B1G+ and live stats will be available on GoPSUSports.com.
The Johnnies come into the Penn State Invitational at 5-2 after a 2-2 week. The Red Storm went 1-2 at the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic in San Diego last weekend, pulling off a reverse sweep over the Toreros in their home opener, 3-2, before falling to both UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, and No. 16 Arizona State, 3-0. St. John's swept NJIT in straight sets, 3-0, inside Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday.
The Red Storm was tremendous defensively against the Highlanders, finishing with nine blocks and limiting NJIT to a 6.3 hitting percentage.
Erin Jones continued her stellar play against NJIT, racking up 14 kills on a 30 percent hitting clip with seven digs, seven assists and three blocks. The junior has led the Red Storm in points and kills in four of its seven matches.
Nationally, the Albuquerque, N.M., native ranks 23rd in points (118.5) and 37th in kills (97). Giorgia Walther joins Jones in the national point rankings, sitting 59th with 103 as of Sept. 12.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the Red Storm in assists for the seventh consecutive contest against NJIT, posting 27 helpers along with eight digs and a kill. The senior is 22nd in the country in total assists with 236.
Magda Stambrowska showed out on Tuesday night with 11 kills on a 73.3 percent success rate. The Katowice, Poland, product sits 54th on the national stage in hitting percentage with a 39.6 percent clip.
As a team, the Johnnies now rank top-40 in the nation in assists (18th), kills (19th), attacks (37th) and blocks (38th).
The squad will make its return to Penn State's Rec Hall for the first time since the 2010 season this weekend. The Red Storm will match up with the Nittany Lions for the fifth time in program history on Saturday, and the first time since Penn State claimed a straight-set victory in Orlando, Fla., on Sept. 27, 2021.
No. 3 Penn State will be the highest-ranked opponent St. John's has faced since meeting with the No. 1 Nittany Lions on Sept. 19, 2015.
The Johnnies will face off with Princeton for the 17th time in program history on Friday and they will battle Duke for the second time in the all-time series on Saturday.
Princeton sits at 2-1 overall, after taking down Old Dominion and Loyola Maryland, 3-2, in its opening weekend at the Villanova Classic. Sydney Bold and Erin McNair were both named to the Villanova Classic All-Tournament Team. Bold recorded 36 digs, 21 assists and three aces while McNair added 31 kills, 21 digs and three blocks.
Duke comes into the Penn State Invitational with a 3-3 record after playing its first six matches at home. The Blue Devils hold wins against Colgate, Davidson and FIU and fell to their lone ranked opponent in No. 14 Kansas, 3-1. Junior Kerry Keefe leads her team with 77 kills and has posted 49 digs, 12 total blocks and seven aces through the first two weeks of play.
No. 3 Penn State is riding a perfect 5-0 record into its home invitational and holds ranked wins over No. 15 Tennessee, 3-1, No. 4 Louisville, 3-0 and No. 9 Kentucky, 3-2, in its opening five matches. 2023 AVCA Second Team All-American selection Jess Mruzik leads the charge for Penn State as she has logged a team-high 69 kills at a 32.7 percent rate with 32 digs and seven blocks.
