The Red Storm have won seven straight Jack Kaiser Classic Titles
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team is set to close out its nonconference slate this weekend when it hosts the 10th annual Jack Kaiser Classic inside Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm will start its final home invitational on Friday at 10 a.m., taking on Iona, before battling LIU later in the day at 7 p.m. The Johnnies will close the tournament against Bryant at 2 p.m. on Saturday. All three matches will be streamed on FloSports and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's will look to win its eighth straight Jack Kaiser Classic title, having captured the last seven iterations, dating back to the 2016 season.
The Johnnies come into its final weekend of nonconference play with an 8-3 record after going 3-1 in its last four matches.
The Red Storm earned its second reverse sweep in seven days when it bested Princeton, 3-2, to start the Penn State Invitational last Friday. The program then topped Duke, 3-1 but fell to No. 3 Penn State, 3-0, to close out the tournament on Saturday. St. John's went on to comeback against Fairfield, 3-2, inside Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night.
Erin Jones put together a career night against the Stags, posting a career-high 23 kills and 18 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. The junior also registered four assists, two aces and a block.
Giorgia Walther produced a season-high 27 kills on 30.8 percent hitting with three digs and a block on Wednesday. Rashanny Solano Smith registered a season-best 25 digs while Wiktoria Kowalczyk added a season-high 58 assists against Fairfield.
On Monday, Jones was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after being tabbed to the Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team and notching the second triple-double in program history against Princeton. The junior tallied 13 kills, 26 assists and 12 digs against the Tigers to go along with a career-high five blocks.
Nationally, the Albuquerque, N.M., native ranks 21st in points (189.5) and 35th in kills (159). Walther joins Jones in the national point and kill rankings, sitting 45th with 179 points and 49th with 158 kills as of Sept. 18.
The Red Storm will meet Iona for the 10th time in program history on Friday morning before battling LIU for the 16th time later in the day. On Saturday, St John's will face off against Bryant for the sixth contest in the all-time series and for the third consecutive season.
Iona enters its first meeting with St. John's since 2016 with a 1-8 overall record this season, after going 1-2 at the Henson Hawk Invitational last weekend. The Gaels fell to UNC Ashville, 2-3 and UMES, 1-3, but picked up its sole win of the season against Hampton, 3-2. Kenzie Wiggins has totaled 102 points, 94 kills, 79 digs, five blocks and five service aces so far this year.
LIU visits Queens at 1-9 overall after going 0-3 last week. The Sharks' only win on the season is against Quinnipiac, 3-2. Camelia Melendez has tallied a team-leading 103 points, 90 kills, 69 digs, nine aces and eight blocks to start the season while Alasha Colon paces her team in digs, with 181 at 4.89 per set.
Bryant is riding an impressive 10-2 record into the last week of nonconference play, following a 4-0 week. Aubrey LaPour and Arianna Ugolini lead the charge offensively for Bryant as they make up over half of the team's scoring. LaPour leads her squad with 159.5 points, 140 kills, 46 digs and a team-high 29 blocks while Ugolini has registered 152 points, 123 kills, 78 digs, 22 aces and 12 blocks.
