St. John’s to Begin BIG EAST Play Against Seton Hall and Georgetown This Weekend

The Red Storm will host Seton Hall on Friday before traveling to Georgetown on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a 4-0 end to its nonconference slate, the St. John's volleyball team will begin BIG EAST play this weekend when it takes on Seton Hall and Georgetown.
St. John's will kick off conference play by hosting Seton Hall on Friday at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena. On Sunday, the Red Storm will travel to Washington D.C. for a date with Georgetown inside McDonough Arena at 1 p.m. The Johnnies' match against the Pirates will be streamed on ESPN+ while their contest with the Hoya's will be streamed on HoyaVision. St. John's won all four of its matches last week, closing out its nonconference slate with an 11-3 overall record. The Red Storm bested Fairfield last Wednesday, 3-2, before claiming its eighth straight Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic title after taking down, Iona, 3-0, LIU, 3-0, and Bryant, 3-2.
Following selections to the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team, tournament MVP Wiktoria Kowalczyk and Erin Jones were both tabbed to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the second time this season.
Kowalczyk was stellar anchoring the Red Storm last week, tallying 180 assists at 11.25 per set with 25 digs and seven aces. Against LIU, the Warsaw, Poland native notched her second double-double of the season behind a match-best 40 assists and 10 digs.
The senior currently leads the BIG EAST and St. John's with 527 total assists. The standout's 527 helpers also rank second in the country as of Sept. 26.
Jones continued to dominate last week, registering 71 kills at 4.44 per set with 49 digs, 12 assists and 10 service aces while notching double-doubles in three of the team's four outings.
The junior closed out the Johnnies' nonconference slate with her sixth double-double of the year on 17 kills and 11 digs against Bryant. The 2023 All-BIG EAST recipient also matched her career high in aces with four against the Bulldogs.
Nationally, the Albuquerque, N.M., product currently sits at sixth with 247 points, ninth with 207 kills and 21st with 23 aces.
As a team, the Johnnies rank top-40 in the country in assists (second), kills (second), attacks (12th), blocks (12th), service aces (17th) and digs (39th).
St. John's will open BIG EAST play at home for the third straight season. Additionally, the Red Storm will open conference competition against Seton Hall for the first time since it hosted the Pirates to begin BIG EAST play in 2013.
The Johnnies will meet with Seton Hall for the 42nd time in program history on Friday, as they lead the series, 21-20. St. John's will square off Georgetown for the 38th time in the all-time series on Sunday. The Red Storm holds a 27-10 all-time advantage over the Hoyas and have won seven straight matches against Georgetown, coming into this weekend's contest.
The Pirates will begin conference play with a 6-5 overall record. Reagan Mark leads Seton Hall with 119 points and 98 kills to go along with 125 digs and 15 aces. Rylee Nelson serves as the Pirates libero, racking up 185 digs at a BIG EAST leading 4.62 per set. As a team, Seton Hall leads the conference in digs with 662 at 16.55 per set.
Georgetown will host the Johnnies after going 7-5 in its nonconference slate. Dionna Mitchell holds down the offense for the Hoyas, racking up 162 kills at 3.77 per set, for fourth in the BIG EAST. Vaughan Anoa'i has dominated in front of the net, ranking second in the conference with 50 total blocks at 1.29 per set.
Following this weekend's opening to BIG EAST play, the Red Storm will travel to take on Xavier and DePaul on Oct. 4 and Oct. 6, respectively.
