St. John’s Takes Down Seton Hall, 3-1, to Open BIG EAST Play

Erin Jones notched her seventh double-double of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2024) – The St. John's volleyball team took down Seton Hall, 3-1, behind Erin Jones' seventh double-double of the season on Friday night inside Carnesecca Arena, to open BIG EAST play.
After falling in the first set, St. John's (12-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) bounced back, decisively taking the following three frames and the match. The scores of the sets were 23-25, 25-19, 25-12 and 25-14.
"Phenomenal team win tonight," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "We were clicking on all cylinders in sets two, three and four. Fantastic home court environment and I want to thank all of our fans who were our seventh player tonight."
Jones led the way for the Red Storm, posting 16 kills on a 36.7 percent clip and a match-leading 18 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. The junior also registered six assists, two aces and two block assists against Seton Hall (6-6, 0-1 BIG EAST).
Giorgia Walther led all hitters with 22 kills at a 33.3 hitting percentage to go along with seven digs and a block. Magda Stambrowska earned eight kills on a 44.4 percent success rate, five total blocks and two digs.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the match with 40 assists paired with eight digs, four blocks and two kills. Rashanny Solano Smith tacked on 16 digs while Lucrezia Lodi added 10 digs, five kills and three aces.
As a team, the Red Storm led the match with 54 kills, 51 assists, 63 digs and 11 blocks, earning its fifth straight win.
Seton Hall started the match with a 4-2 edge before the Red Storm put together a 7-1 stretch that featured four Walther slams to lead, 9-5. The Pirates quickly cut their deficit down to one, 9-8, but St. John's poured on a 7-3 spurt, growing its lead back to five, 16-11. The Pirates responded with a 10-3 run, taking a one-point advantage, 20-19, forcing the Johnnies to burn both their timeouts. After battling to a 23-23 tie, Seton Hall put down back-to-back kills to win the set, 25-23. Walther led the frame with six kills.
The second set kicked off to an 8-7 Seton Hall edge, but the Johnnies ripped off a 7-2 run that featured four kills between Walther and Kowalczyk to lead, 14-10. After calling a timeout, the Pirates put down four consecutive points, tying the frame at 14. The Johnnies went on to build a three-point lead, 21-18, and closed the frame on a final 4-1 stretch, capped off by a Stambrowska kill to take the second stanza, 25-19. Jones slammed seven kills and picked up five digs in the second game.

Seton Hall went on to cut the Red Storm advantage down to eight, 15-7, following a 4-1 rally that forced the Johnnies to call a timeout. St. John's cruised through the rest of the set on a 10-5 stretch, taking the frame, 25-12. Walther paced the set with five kills.
The Johnnies raced out to a 10-3 lead that was sparked by eight straight Red Storm points served up by Lodi. The Pirates trimmed St. John's lead down to three, 13-10, but the Red Storm improved its advantage to nine, 20-11, on a 7-1 run. The Johnnies carried its momentum to the very end, winning the set and the match, 25-14. Walther registered seven kills at a 50 percent rate in the fourth and final period.
St. John's will continue its opening weekend of BIG EAST Play when it takes on Georgetown on Sunday in McDonough Arena. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Washington D.C. and the match will be streamed on HoyaVision.
