St. John’s to Square Off with Villanova at Belson Stadium on Saturday

The Red Storm and Wildcats to meet for 44th time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team (2-4-3) will host Villanova (0-4-4) in its 2024 BIG EAST home opener on Saturday evening.
Kick-off from Belson Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday's match will be streamed on FloFC and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com. The first 200 students in attendance will receive a free Chick-fil-A sandwich, courtesy of RedZone.
The Johnnies battled against Big Ten foe Penn State, putting the Nittany Lions on the ropes before falling, 2-1, on Tuesday. The Red Storm outshot its visitors, 15-5, and produced four corners in the effort. Redshirt freshman Tyler Morck registered his first career start on Tuesday and scored the Johnnies' lone goal with a point-blank rip in the 22nd minute on a pass from Miguel Diaz.
Red Storm Head Coach Dr. David Masur is on the verge of becoming the seventh men's soccer coach in NCAA history to reach the 400-win plateau with a singular Division I team. The 34-year head coach of St. John's, who sits with 399 victories with the program, will also be the second active Division I head coach to reach the milestone with a win on Saturday, joining Maryland's Sasho Cirovski (430). The Johnnies are also closing in on 500 triumphs as a program, sitting with 498 victories entering Saturday's slate.
The weekend matchup will mark the 44th all-time meeting between the Johnnies and Wildcats with the Red Storm holding a 26-11-6 advantage in the series. St. John's also boasts a 15-4-2 record and has produced 13 clean sheets inside the friendly confines of Belson Stadium against Villanova.
St. John's blew past the Wildcats with a 3-1 triumph last season in the Keystone State, marking the fourth consecutive time the visiting team emerged victorious. Macoumba Ba and Nigel Griffith produced three-point efforts in the win as Ba scored off a feed from his offensive counterpart before assisting on the game-winner from Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau in the 57th minute of the Oct. 14, 2023 affair. Griffith put the game away with a strike in the 69th minute of action.
In search of its first win of the 2024 campaign, Villanova has not gone down quietly this season. Seven of its eight matches have been one-goal affairs, earning ties against Saint Peter's, Lafayette, FDU and Penn. Colby Raymond and Jordan Canica pace the team with three goals apiece, while the latter has one assist to his credit.
Despite a goals against average over two, the Wildcats have logged 4.9 saves per game, good for second in the conference and 19th in the nation. Sebastian Cutler-DeJesus has managed 4.0 stops per contest and sits 44th in Division I.
