Turri will coach the 29th annual meeting between the NYPD and FDNY at Hofstra
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Lacrosse Head Coach Justin Turri will lead the New York Police Department (NYPD) from the sidelines in the Premier Lacrosse League's (PLL) 29th annual 'Battle of the Badges' game against the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) on Saturday, the league announced on Thursday.
The exhibition game is in honor and remembrance of all first responders and their families prior to the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11.
The two squads comprised of active duty first responders are set to square off at 2 p.m. from James M. Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra. The match-up will be held ahead of the PLL Semifinals, which are slated for 5 and 7:30 p.m.
"To be involved with the PLL once again and their commitment to bringing our sport to the next level is an honor and to do it with New York's Finest is humbling," said Turri. "I can't wait to compete and have some fun with a group that selflessly serves and protects us every day."
"We're honored to host this storied matchup between the NYPD and FDNY, and tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to serving and protecting our communities," said Mike Rabil, co-founder and CEO of the PLL in a release. "The bravery, teamwork, and resolve these heroes display day in and day out are an inspiration, and we can't wait to see their skill and athleticism on display at the Battle of the Badges game."
Turri is entering his third season at the helm in Queens this coming year. In 2024, he guided the Red Storm to its highest win total win total in five years and its first BIG EAST victory since 2016. The Long Island native had a nine-year professional career in the PLL and MLL. During his collegiate playing days, he was a two-time USILA All-American and won an NCAA Championship at Duke in 2010.
Longtime Hofstra Head Coach Seth Tierney will lead the FDNY squad this weekend. Tickets to Saturday's events can be found here. All tickets are permissible for the Battle of the Badges game along with both semifinal match-ups.
