St. John’s Takes Down Seton Hall in Tuesday Matinee, 3-1

Martina Ghezzi finishes with career-high 18 kills
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (6-14, 2-5 BIG EAST) closed out its homestand with a win over Seton Hall (6-11, 0-7 BIG EAST) on Tuesday afternoon, securing its first home BIG EAST victory of the season. Martina Ghezzi impressed with a career-high 18 kills, as the Red Storm had offensive production from seven players. Following Tuesday's match, the Italian native has recorded at least 10 kills in the past four matches. The scores of the sets were 25-19, 25-11, 17-25 and 25-17.
Ghezzi's 18 kills led all players in the match. Erin Jones and Martina Capponcelli split setter duties, securing 20 assists apiece. Rashanny Solano Smith notched a team-high 16 digs. Capponcelli also notched a career-high four service aces.
To start the match, neither team jumped out to an early lead as the set featured eight tie scores. With Seton Hall leading at the media time, the Red Storm went on a 5-2 run to take the lead and force a visitor's timeout at 19-17. The Johnnies would power their way to a first set win, 25-19.
The second game saw St. John's jump out to an early 4-1 lead. The offense continued to roll as the lead grew to as many as six at 10-4. The Pirates attempted to claw their way, but the hosts applied pressure before the media timeout, 15-9. The Red Storm closed out the game on a 10-2 run, 25-11, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
St. John's opened the third frame by engineering a 6-3 run, but Seton Hall climbed back within one forcing a home team timeout, 8-7. The two sides would trade points to 12-12, until the Pirates used a 5-1 run to extend the lead, 17-13. Seton Hall's lead would reach as many as six at 21-15, before securing the frame, 25-17.
To open the fourth stanza, the Red Storm took an 4-1 early lead but the Pirates quickly erased the deficit to knot the score at 6-6. At 12-11, Ghezzi fired her 15th kill to help kickstart of Johnnies run. After the media timeout, Ludovica Zola blocked her third shot of the contest to give the home team the edge, 16-12. St. John's didn't look back, and took the final set 25-17, securing a 3-1 win.
The Red Storm now begin a three-match road trip to the Midwest. On Friday, St. John's faces off with No. 13 Creighton in Omaha, Neb. First serve at D.J. Sokol Arena is set for 7 p.m. CST.
