St. John’s Volleyball Begins Midwest Road Trip at No. 13 Creighton

The Red Storm kickoff a three-match trip in Omaha
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (6-14, 2-5 BIG EAST) heads to the Midwest for the first time season as it begins a three-match road swing at No. 13 Creighton (13-5, 6-0 BIG EAST). The Bluejays are the third nationally ranked team that the Red Storm will play this season, following tilts with No.4 Louisville and No.17 Tennessee during the non-conference portion of the schedule. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CST.
Following Tuesday's win over Seton Hall, Head Coach Joanne Persico is one win away from 600 career victories. In her 32nd season at the helm, Persico ranks 16th among active head coaches in career wins and is the winningest head coach at a single BIG EAST program.
The Red Storm wrapped up its homestand with a 3-1 victory over Seton Hall on Tuesday afternoon, earning its first BIG EAST home win of the season. Martina Ghezzi powered the Red Storm with a career-high 18 kills, marking her fourth straight match with double-digit kills. Erin Jones and Martina Capponcelli split setting duties, tallying 20 assists apiece, while Rashanny Solano Smith anchored the defense with 16 digs. Capponcelli also added a career-best four service aces.
The Johnnies took control early in the first two sets, before the Pirates responded by taking the third. St. John's regained momentum in the final frame, closing out the match to improve to 2-5 in BIG EAST play.
Creighton enters the weekend with 13-5 overall record and has gone unblemished in conference play. The Bluejays have spent the entire season ranked inside the top 20 of American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches' Poll. Last weekend Creighton went swept Villanova and Georgetown in a pair of road contest.
The BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, Ava Martin, leads the Bluejays with 257 kills, averaging 4.08 kills per set. Kiara Reinhardt ranks sixth in the NCAA Division I with a .450 hitting percentage. Annalea Maeder paces the Creighton offense with 10.17 assists per set and leads the BIG EAST in the category. Saige Damrow guides the defensive efforts, totaling 201 digs and averaging 3.24 gids per set, while Reinhardt has recorded 74 total blocks, swatting 1.17 shots per set.
Head Coach Brian Rosen took over the helm of the program back in April following the departure of longtime head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. Rosen is in his fourth season overall with the Bluejays. Last season, he was named the AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year. Since joining the Creighton staff back in 2022 the team has gone 88-13, making it to the Elite Eight last season.
Following the contests in Nebraska, the Johnnies will turn their attention to a pair of matches with Xavier and Butler. On Oct. 24, the Red Storm square off with the Musketeers at 6 p.m. in the Cintas Center. The following day St. John's heads to the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., for a 5 p.m. match against the Bulldogs.
