St. John’s Drops Friday Night Battle at UConn, 1-0

Red Storm outshot the Huskies, 10-8
STORRS, Conn.– The St. John's men's soccer team (6-4-3, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) dropped a Friday night battle at UConn (8-3-3, 3-2 BIG EAST), 1-0.
The two sides battled at Morrone Stadium with the Red Storm outshooting the Huskies, 10-8. UConn's Charlie Holmes fired home the game-winner with a header off a corner kick in the 84th minute.
The Johnnies outpaced the Huskies in shots on target, 5-3. Jayden Montgomery paced the Red Storm with a pair of shots, both on target. Guilherme Gomes and Bjorn Nikolajewski each added two strikes with one on frame in Storrs.
The Red Storm generated its first chance of the evening after Montgomery stripped a Huskies' defender right outside the 18-ard box. The Tomball, Texas native squared up for a strike and rifled one that went straight to the UConn goalkeeper Kyle Durham.
The Johnnies recorded the first three shots of the match preventing UConn from logging a strike for the first 40 minutes. In the 41st, Alec McLachlan made his first of two saves of the night deflecting away the oncoming attempt while on the ground. The two sides went into halftime break scoreless, 0-0.
As the two sides continued to battle in Storrs, the Red Storm started to generated activity on the attacking end. In the 68th minute, Luca Fargnoli battled for possession amidst two UConn defenders. The sophomore took a large first touch into the right side of the box and launched a shot that flew past the goaltender and rung off the crossbar.
As the Huskies began to rattle off opportunities in their attacking third. In the 84th minute, Sabri Hanni played a ball in off a corner kick that found the head of Charlie Holmes right in front of the goalmouth as he headed it home to give UConn a 1-0 advantage with just under seven minutes to play.
In the final minute of play at Morrone Stadium, as the ball was headed around the box Ivar Na Aga got a flick on a volley that landed on the side of the net. The Huskies held on for the victory in Storrs.
The Red Storm will be back in action on the road on Tuesday night when it faces Monmouth at 7 p.m.
