St. John’s Moves Past Monmouth Fueled by Guilherme Gomes’ Game-Winner, 1-0

Gomes logged his sixth goal of the season on Tuesday night
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The St. John's men's soccer team (7-4-3, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) recorded a 1-0 road victory over Monmouth (5-6-3, 2-2-3 CAA) on Tuesday night, 1-0.
Guilherme Gomes netted the game-winner for the second time in the last three matches sending home a world-class finish in the 62nd minute. The rookie netted his sixth goal of the season, which marks the most by a Johnnie since Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau netted the fifth-most in program history logging 14 tallies during the 2023 campaign.
Alec McLachlan logged his fourth clean sheet of the 2025 campaign and first since he shutout then-No. 5 Wake Forest on Aug. 31. Tuesday night's shutout marked the senior's fourth straight season and third with the Red Storm posting four or more clean sheets.
The Red Storm dominated the Hawks in the shot category by a wide margin, 17-3. The Johnnies outshot the home side, 8-1, in the latter half recording the first eight attempts of the second stanza. Luca Fargnoli recorded a career-high five shots, including back-to-back looks on frame in the final 10 minutes. Jayden Montgomery, Xavi Abeijon, Igor Goncalves an Gabin Thomelier added a pair of strikes each.
In the opening half, the Red Storm got started early as Montgomery blasted a glaring opportunity over the crossbar in the seventh minute. Abeijon recorded the first look on frame delivering a strike to the right side of the net that was saved.
The Hawks had a chance at taking the lead midway through the opening half before McLachlan cleared the danger.
The two teams went into the locker room knotted at 0-0 with the Red Storm holding a commanding lead in the shot category, 9-2.
In the second half, the two teams battled for possession as play maintained steady in the midfield. Kaief Tomlinson logged the Johnnies first shot attempt of the latter frame steering one on frame.
In the 65th minute. Monmouth attempted to clear the ball out of the box with a header. The clear fell short as Gomes' trapped it with his back away from the goal turning into an opportunity on frame. The freshman tracked down the volley and launched a rocket from 20 yards out past the goaltender into the left side of the net to give the Johnnies a 1-0 advantage.
As the Red Storm searched to double its lead, Fargnoli saw a clean look off a slipped pass firing one on frame that was deflected by the Monmouth goalkeeper. The rebound went back to the sophomore as he took another crack at goal that was once again saved by Herman Seierstad Johnsen in the 82nd minute.
St. John's held on despite a late-game attempt from the Hawks that drifted just wide as the Red Storm moved to 4-1 all-time against Monmouth.
St. John's will return to BIG EAST action on Saturday when it welcomes RV Seton Hall for a 4:30 p.m. kick-off at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
