Erin Jones recorded her second straight triple-double, seventh overall
INDIANAPOLIS– The St. John's volleyball team (6-17, 2-8 BIG EAST) closed out its weekend road swing with a setback at Butler (11-12, 4-6 BIG EAST) on Saturday evening, 3-2. Erin Jones recorded her second straight triple-double and seventh of the season. The senior finished with a stat line of 18 kills, 19 assists and 13 digs, with two total blocks to boot.
Despite claiming the first two sets of the match, the Red Storm fell in the final three sets with all three being decided by no more than five points. The set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25 and 10-15.
Jones led the team in kills with 18, and Martina Ghezzi closely followed with 15. Martina Capponcelli paced the offense with 23 assists. Defensively, it was Rashanny Solano Smith who collected a season- and team-high 25 digs. Ghezzi chipped in 14 digs of her own to record a double-double. Kya Harris and Chloe Bell each finished tied for the match-high with 2.5 blocks.
St. John's took control of the first set early, running out to a 10-3 lead. The Red Storm offense continued to roll featuring three service aces in the opening set, including one from Capponcelli to give the visitors a 17-8 advantage. The Johnnies wouldn't look back and took the set, 25-17.
The second frame saw more tightly contested play, as the Johnnies were only able to lead by as many as two at 10-8. St. John's would fall into rhythm and go on a 3-0 run to force a Butler timeout at 13-8. A 7-2 was enough to put some distance between the Bulldogs, but the hosts clawed their way back, 22-19. A Ghezzi kill was all that the Red Storm needed to put the frame to rest, 25-20, and taking a two-set lead.
In the third stanza, Butler established an early lead at 5-3 but Ella Parker tooled a block to knot the score at 5-5. The Bulldogs engineered a 6-2 run to take a sizeable lead and the Red Storm responded to cut the deficit to just one a 11-10. The hosts widened the gap once again by as many as six, but once again St. John's clawed its way back at 21-18. The Johnnies were able to stave off set point twice, but Butler went on to take the third stanza, 25-21.
The fourth game started out in favor of the Red Storm and was highlighted by a magnificent solo block by Jones at 7-3. The Bulldogs made a push to knot the game at 11-11 and would take the lead on the next point. Both squads would exchange points for the middle part of the set, all the way to 18-18. From there, Butler went on a 5-2 and then took a timeout at 23-20. After the timeout the hosts closed out the set with an identical 25-21 score, leading to a winner take all fifth set.
The ultimate frame saw St. John's start on a 4-2 run. As the set progressed, the Bulldogs knotted the score at 6-6. After switching sides at 8-6, a Butler attacking error brought the Johnnies to within one, 8-7. The hosts would use a 3-1 run to force St. John's to use its timeout at 11-8. The Bulldogs would end the match on a 4-2 run, taking the final set 15-10 and the match, 3-2.
