QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (9-19, 5-10 BIG EAST) fell to No. 12 Creighton (22-5, 15-0 BIG EAST) on Friday evening in Carnesecca Arena, 3-0. Prior to the start of the match, the program honored the four seniors on Creighton and the four graduating Johnnies: Martina Ghezzi, Erin Jones, Lucrezia Lodi and Ludovica Zola. The set scores were 15-25, 13-25 and 18-25.
"In a hard-fought match in front of an exciting home crowd, we were able to honor our special seniors who have given it their all, both on and off the court," said Head Coach Joanne Persico.
During the first set, Jones became the first player in program history, the first player in BIG EAST history and the second active player in the NCAA regardless of division to reach 1,000 career kills, assists and digs. To date, the Albuquerque, N.M., native has amassed 1,320 kills, 1,247 assists, and with her six digs tonight, she stands at 1,004 digs, setting the standard for being a true six-rotation player in the BIG EAST.
"How fitting that on her Senior Night, Erin [Jones] accomplished the feat of 1,000 kills, assists and digs. I'm so proud of her," said Persico.
Ella Parker led the way offensively with nine kills. Ghezzi closely followed with eight kills. Jones quarterbacked the offense with 20 assists. Rashanny Solano Smith dug up 12 balls, while Zola logged two total blocks.
Neither team was able to build more than a two-point lead to open the match, exchanging points and runs to 9-7. Creighton then put some distance on the hosts at 13-8, causing a Red Storm timeout. Following the timeout, the Bluejays' offense took off and never relinquished the lead, taking the opening stanza 25-15.
The second set saw Creighton take an early lead, but following a Chloe Bell and Parker block, the hosts were able to level the set at 6-6. Shortly after, the Bluejays responded with two separate 5-0 runs and took the second set, 25-13, and a 2-0 match lead.
In the third frame, the Red Storm and Bluejays traded points all the way to 10-10 and it was highlighted by a Ghezzi solo block. After a timeout, the Johnnies used a block from Jones and Bell to regain the lead at 11-10. Creighton responded with yet another run to take back the lead. Later in the frame, the visitors engineered a 5-0 run to put the match out of reach, 25-18.
Following tonight's match, St. John's heads across the Hudson River to South Orange, N.J., to close out the season against Seton Hall. First serve against the Pirates is set for 1 p.m.
