No. 13/13 St. John’s Dominates Second Half to Blow Past William & Mary, 93-60

The Johnnies opened the second half with a 27-2 scoring run to cruise to a victory
QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 13/13 St. John's men's basketball team (2-1) blew the game open in the second half to roll past William & Mary (2-2) on Saturday. 93-60.
Leading by five at the break, St. John's dominated to start the second half engineering a 27-2 run to open the latter frame and run away with the victory. The Johnnies outscored the Tribe, 54-26, over the final 20 minutes.
The Red Storm has scored more than 90 points in each of its first three games to start the season for the first time since the 1971-72 season. St. John's is averaging 99.0 points per game through three contests.
With the win, St. John's extends its streak of non-conference victories at Carnesecca Arena to 33 games. Under Head Coach Rick Pitino, the Red Storm moves to 16-0 at its on-campus venue winning by an average margin of victory of 28.3 points per game.
For the second time in three games, the Red Storm had five players scored in double-figures and 10 different Johnnies recorded points in the winning effort. St. John's made 12 of its first 18 field goal attempts (66.7%) to start the second half.
The Johnnies recorded 13 steals forcing William & Mary into 24 turnovers converting them into 29 points. St. John's steal total marked a season-high and the most since it tallied 14 swipes against Butler on Jan. 4, 2025.
Bryce Hopkins and Joson Sanon led all scorers with 15 points combining for 12-for-23 shooting from the floor in 46 minutes of action. Dylan Darling filled the box score adding 13 points, five boards, three assists and matched a career-high of four steals in his first start at St. John's. Oziyah Sellers chipped in 13 points and knocked down a season-high three triples shooting 50 percent from beyond-the-arc.
BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Zuby Ejiofor was the fifth Johnnie to score in double-digits finishing with 11 points and a season-high four assists. Ian Jackson logged nine points all in the second half.
Sellers opened the scoring with a triple on the Red Storm's first possession of the evening. Hopkins then jumpstarted an 8-0 scoring run with a bucket before Dillon Mitchell converted an easy lay-up to make it 15-6. The Tribe responded by catching fire from 3-point land, as it scored the first 15 points of the game from beyond-the-arc. William & Mary strung together an 11-3 scoring spurt to come within two, 19-17, forcing a St. John's timeout with 11:27 to go in the first half.
Out of the timeout, Sanon made a steal and took off to the other end of the floor hammering home a dunk on the break. The Tribe tied the game, 26-26, after recording seven unanswered points with 6:11 left in the opening stanza. Sanon continued to find his groove in the opening 20 minutes drilling a triple and finishing in the lane as St. John's held a narrow lead, 37-31. In the final minute of the first frame, the Tribe nailed their seventh triple before Hopkins added a lay-up to bring the scoreline to 39-34 at the half.
In the second half, the Johnnies surged out to a hot start orchestrating a 15-2 run to open the stanza. On back-to-back possessions, Ejiofor put home a second chance slam followed by a Sellers triple as the advantage expanded to 16, 52-36. The scoring streak continued for the Johnnies, Sellers knocked down another shot from downtown, his third 3-point of the night. Darling notched a steal and got out on the run finishing through contact for the old fashioned three-point play. The Idaho State transfer made another play on the defensive end coming up with his third steal of the night adding another fastbreak lay-up to reach double-digits for the first time in his St. John's career.
Lefteris Liotopoulos nailed a long two-point jumper to close out a dominant 27-2 scoring run to open the half as the lead expanded to 30, 66-36, with 13:28 on the clock. The Red Storm limited William & Mary to just two points in the opening 7:42 of the latter half.
Later in the second half, St. John's maintained a sizeable lead for the sold-out Carnesecca Arena crowd of 5,260. Jackson rose up for a breakaway jam to balloon the lead back 30, 84-54, with 3:26 remaining. Mitchell added to the highlight reel plays notching a steal and then sent home a ferocious windmill dunk to force a William & Mary timeout with under two minutes to play. Sanon tallied the final points of the night from the charity stripe as the lead stretched to as many as 35, 93-58. William & Mary registered the final basket as the Red Storm coasted to a 33-point non-conference victory.
St. John's will be back in action at Carnesecca Arena on Thursday when it welcomes Bucknell to Carnesecca Arena at 7 p.m.
