Bryce Hopkins and Oziyah Sellers combine for 48 points to help lead the Red Storm men’s basketball team in convincing win over Big 12 opponent
LAS VEGAS – Less than 24 hours after suffering a heartbreaking defeat in its opening game at the Players Era Championship, the St. John's men's basketball team rebounded in a big way on Tuesday, taking down Baylor, 96-81, at Michelob ULTRA Arena.
The Johnnies will play their third game at The Players Era Championship on Wednesday. Game time, opponent, location and television destination will be released at the conclusion of today's action.
The Red Storm (4-2) was firing on all cylinders offensively, scoring 1.39 points per possession on 57.4 percent shooting. The Johnnies connected on a season high 11 3-pointers, converting at a 50.0 percent clip from downtown. St. John's made 10 of its first 17 attempts from beyond the arc.
Graduate student Bryce Hopkins enjoyed his most productive day as a Johnnie, scoring a season-high 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He sank all three of his 3-point tries, matching his career high in that category. Hopkins also went a perfect 5-for-5 from the line and collected five rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal.
Oziyah Sellers set a new season high in scoring for the second time in as many days, netting 22 points. He matched a career high with five made triples for the second straight afternoon, going 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The senior is now 10-of-13 (76.9%) from deep at the Players Era Championship.
Dillon Mitchell matched a season high with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting. The senior forward affected the game in every way possible, posting six rebounds, six assists, one block and one steal.
Ian Jackson also had an efficient afternoon for the Johnnies, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a 3-of-4 showing from long range.
Entering the game shooting 48.0 percent from the floor and 36.5 percent from downtown, Baylor (4-1) was held to 37.2 percent and 32.0 percent, respectively, by the Red Storm on Tuesday. The Bears have received votes in all four editions of this year's Associated Press poll.
Redshirt sophomore Cameron Carr scored a game-high 27 points for the Bears, going 8-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-8 from downtown.
The Johnnies came out on the front foot, opening the game on a 21-6 run. They made six of their first 10 field goal tries while forcing Baylor into 2-of-18 start from the floor. Sellers had 12 of those first 21, going 3-of-3 from deep and 3-for-3 from the line.
Baylor answered with a 12-2 run to get within five, 23-18, with 9:30 to go in the half. Carr scored eight for the Bears during that Burst.
Ahead by five a few minutes later, the Red Storm rattled off a quick 6-0 spurt to bump its lead back to double digits, but Baylor immediately hit back with a 9-3 burst to cut its deficit back to a handful, 39-34, with just over a minute to play.
St. John's closed the period with back-to-back buckets to take a 43-34 lead into the locker room.
The Red Storm extended its run to 12-0 on the other side of the intermission, scoring the second half's first eight points to take its largest lead of the game to that point, 51-34, on a Hopkins 3-point play with 17:32 to go.
Baylor scored the game's next six points to get within 11, but that was as close as the Bears would get, as the Johnnies ballooned their lead to as many as 22 in the closing minutes of the contest.
