Guilherme Gomes scored twice on Friday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – Freshman standout Guilherme Gomes scored twice for the St. John's men's soccer team on Friday night, as the Red Storm closed out BIG EAST play with a 2-2 draw against Butler at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Gomes' brace, his second multi-goal effort of the season, bumped his team-leading goal total to eight. The freshman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is now tied for fourth in the league in scoring at the conclusion of conference play.
Gabin Thomelier and Jeremy Sharp assisted on Gomes' first goal of the evening, which put the Red Storm (8-5-4, 3-3-2 BIG EAST) ahead 1-0 in the 25th minute. The sequence began when Sharp took hold of a failed clearing attempt just outside the top right corner of the box and played a short pass in for Thomelier. Thomelier then sent a perfectly placed ball to the back post, where Gomes was waiting to head it home and give St. John's early advantage.
Butler (5-10-2, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) equalized in the 64th minute, as Lou-Kent Bosc found the back of the net off an assist from Ryan Hannosh.
Just over two minutes later, Bjorn Nikolajewski was shown a red card, forcing the Johnnies to play the remainder of the contest with only 10 men.
Four minutes later, Butler jumped in front. Bosc assisted on a Brendan Cunningham tally to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Facing a one-goal deficit and playing down a man, the Red Storm showed no signs of quitting. In the 73rd minute, Andrew Porucznik drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty chance for Gomes. The freshman hesitated to force the keeper to his right before calmly burying the shot and pulling the Red Storm even.
With momentum on its side the Red Storm registered a number of quality scoring chances in the final minutes, but could not convert. In the 80th minute, Antonio Biggs skied for a header that sailed narrowly over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Sharp worked his way into an open look on target from near the top of the box, but Butler keeper Aurie Brisco came up with his fourth save of the evening.
On the game, shots were 14-11 in favor of St. John's, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
The Red Storm has one game remaining on its 2025 regular season schedule, as the Johnnies will welcome City College of New York (CCNY) on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
