Red Storm will open the New Year against the Blue Demons at Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team will host DePaul on Thursday afternoon to ring in the New Year.

In its last time out, The Red Storm (12-3, 2-2 BIG EAST) took home a road win over Marquette, 73-66, on Monday at the Al McGuire Center. Five Johnnies- Beautiful Waheed (14), Brooke Moore (13), Jailah Donald (12), Daniela Abies (11) and Shaulana Wagner (11) scored in double-figures to lead the Johnnies to a road victory in Milwaukee.
Kylie Lavelle recorded a well-rounded performance in Milwaukee, adding seven points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. The Red Storm controlled the glass with a 40–33 rebounding edge over the Golden Eagles, as both Lavelle and Abies grabbed eight boards.
The Red Storm have shot efficiently from the floor during its first 15 contests, posting a 47.1% field goal mark, which ranks second in the BIG EAST and 27th in NCAA Division I. Moore, the team's leading scorer (14.8 PPG), is shooting a 58.8 percent clip, which leads the league and sits 21st in the country.
Wagner finished the game just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine assists. The graduate student guard continues to be one of the top distributors across the nation, ranking 11th in the country with 84 total assists through 15 games. The Troy transfer ranks atop the league and is 23rd in the nation, logging 5.6 helpers per game.
St. John's and DePaul (3-12, 0-4 BIG EAST) will meet for the 35th time on Thursday afternoon, with the series dating back to Feb. 18, 2006, when the Blue Demons joined the conference. DePaul leads the all-time series, 26-8, with the Red Storm claiming three of the last five contests. In the last meeting, the Blue Demons outlasted the Johnnies in overtime, 65-64. Two of the last three meetings have gone to an extra period, including the program's first-ever double-overtime victory in an 83-77 triumph on Jan. 25, 2024.
DePaul enters the matchup with a 3-12 overall record and a 0-4 mark in league competition during the 2025 campaign. The Blue Demons were most recently bested by BIG EAST opponent Villanova, 81-48, on Dec. 29 to close out 2025.
Kate Novik led the team with 14 points, six rebounds, an assist, a block and a pair of swipes in the outing at Villanova. The junior guard leads the league and is second in the nation with one triple-double (12 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists), recorded against UMass-Lowell on Dec. 11. The Morehead State transfer averages 12.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.
Defensively, DePaul ranks third in the league with 9.7 steals per game, forcing 19.0 turnovers per contest, and averaging 3.1 blocks per game. Alayna West anchors that effort, ranking third in the conference and 38th nationally, logging 2.33 steals per contest.
St. John's will return to action on Jan. 7 when it travels to Hartford, Conn., to face No. 1/1 UConn at 7:30 p.m. at PeoplesBank Arena.
