Brown is elevated to associate head coach after seven years as the Red Storm’s pitching coach
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Head Coach Mike Hampton has promoted George Brown to associate head coach and added Garrett Scavelli as a volunteer assistant coach ahead of the 2025 season, the program announced on Wednesday.
Brown, who has spent the last seven seasons as the Red Storm's pitching coach, is elevated to a new role and will continue to work with the program's pitching staff.
"I'm thrilled to promote George to associate head coach for the upcoming season," said Hampton. "He has done an incredible job with our pitchers over the last seven seasons. George has great organizational skills and I can't wait to continue to watch the growth of our pitching staff under his guidance."
A member of the 2024 BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year, Brown's pitching staff has been dominant, with eight St. John's hurlers signing professional contracts during his tenure. Most recently, Xavier Kolhosser was selected in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins after boasting a 9-2 record with a 3.43 ERA and 51 strikeouts across 15 appearances last season, 12 of which were starts.
Brown's stellar pitching staff helped propel the Red Storm to its conference-leading 10th BIG EAST Tournament Title in 2024, posting a 4.35 ERA, the 17th best in the country, with four shutouts. St. John's was one of 11 teams at the Division I level that had three pitchers with six or more wins last season – Kolhosser (9, 22nd in NCAA), Mario Pesca (6), Louis Marinaro (6). Of BIG EAST Pitchers to toss at least seven innings last season, the Red Storm had four of the conference's top-10 hurlers in ERA.
At the conclusion of the 2024 season, two St. John's pitchers, Pesca and Marinaro, were tabbed to All-BIG EAST Teams while Kolhosser was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region Second Team.
A St. John's alumnus, Brown put together a career record of 22-3 and is one of just three pitchers in program history alongside Frank Viola and Michael O'Conner to record at least 20 wins and fewer than five losses. In addition, the three-time BIG EAST Regular Season Champion's 22 wins rank fourth in school history and was part of the only four-year class in St. John's history to win 40 or more games in each of its four campaigns.
Prior to his arrival back to Queens in 2018, Brown spent two seasons on Matt Senk's staff at Stony Brook, guiding the Seawolves to a pair of successful seasons. In his first year with the Seawolves, the team made it to the championship round of the America East Tournament before falling to top-seeded Binghamton.
Brown guided rookie right-hander Brian Herrmann to spots on the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America Team and All-America East First Team in 2017. In his first year on staff with the Seawolves, Brown helped right-hander Bret Clarke garner America East Rookie of the Year accolades.
Before his stint at Stony Brook, Brown spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Monmouth and one year as a pitching coach/recruiting coordinator at Siena.
In addition to Brown, Coach Hampton has named Scavelli a volunteer assistant coach for the 2025 campaign. The addition to the coaching staff will oversee outfield responsibilities and assist with hitting development.
"I'm really excited to add Garrett to our staff this season," said Hampton. "His dedication on the field last year was a big part of our success and BIG EAST Tournament Title. I know that his impact working with our outfielders and assisting with our hitters will continue to move our program forward."
