Liam O’Leary pitches first complete game since Brandon Backman in 2022; Adam Agresti homered twice

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's baseball team opened BIG EAST play behind a complete-game effort from right-hander Liam O'Leary to defeat Seton Hall, 8-2, on Thursday afternoon.

O'Leary delivered a masterful outing, striking out eight while allowing just two runs. The junior became the first Johnnie to toss a complete game since Brandon Backman's complete-game shutout against Seton Hall on May 8, 2022.

Redshirt sophomore Adam Agresti recorded his second multi-home run game of the season, blasting a solo shot and a two-run homer to help propel the Red Storm (12-17, 1-0 BIG EAST) past the Pirates (11-10, 0-1 BIG EAST).

Agresti went 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and a single, scoring three times. Will Cowan delivered in a key spot, coming off the bench with a pinch-hit, bases-clearing triple. Jayder Raifstanger and Lewis Rodriguez each added a hit.

Seton Hall opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI triple.

St. John's answered in the top of the fourth, as Agresti's first home run of the afternoon evened the game at 1-1.

The Johnnies broke things open in the sixth inning with a four-run outburst. With the bases juiced and one out, Cowan stepped in as a pinch hitter and ripped a triple down the right-field line to give St. John's a 4-1 lead. Ayden Frey followed with a sacrifice fly to score Cowan and extend the advantage to 5-1.

The Pirates responded with an RBI ground out to trim the deficit to 5-2.

The Red Storm added two more runs in the eighth behind Agresti's two-run blast, scoring Shaun McMillan to make it 7-2. St. John's tacked on another run in the ninth to cap the scoring.

O'Leary closed the door in the ninth, striking out two batters and inducing a groundout to seal the victory.

St. John's and Seton Hall will battle again on Saturday with a twin bill. The first game is set for 12 p.m. and game two is set for 3 p.m. in South Orange, N.J.
