Jon LeGrande nearly hits for cycle as five Johnnies record multi-hit efforts
The Red Storm (11-17) put together a complete effort on both sides of the diamond to snap a three-game skid, capitalizing on multiple Seahawk (9-16, 7-5 NEC) errors.
Jon LeGrande led the way, going 3-for-5 at the plate and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. The senior drove in three runs, scored twice and stole a base. Jayder Raifstanger also recorded three hits, collecting a pair of singles and a double. Shaun McMillan, Dylan Fitzsimmons and Lewis Rodriguez each added two hits, with Fitzsimmons legging out his team-leading second triple of the season.
The Johnnie pitching staff held Wagner to just two runs, highlighted by Thomas Harding earning his second win of the season with a two-hit, scoreless start. Brady Clark, Carter Wall, Conor Burns and Nick Gilpin all added scoreless relief appearances.
St. John's opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Rob Mansour reached on an error and Rodriguez singled down the left-field line. LeGrande followed with a 352-foot home run over the left-field wall, his second of the season, to give the Johnnies a 3-0 lead.
Wagner responded in the top of the third, plating two runs off Tommy Conley, who limited further damage to keep it 3-2.
In the bottom of the third, the Red Storm loaded the bases and capitalized on a Seahawk error to add an insurance run and extend the lead to 4-2.
St. John's broke the game open in the middle innings. In the fifth, Mansour lifted a sacrifice fly to score Ayden Frey. Rodriguez followed with a bunt single and later scored, while LeGrande drove in another run with a double. With two outs, McMillan reached on an error that allowed another run to score, making it 8-2.
In the sixth, Mansour drove in Fitzsimmons to push the lead to 9-2. The Johnnies added two more runs in the seventh after back-to-back hits from Raifstanger and McMillan, followed by Fitzsimmons' two-run triple to bring the score to its 11-2 final.
Gilpin put the finishing touches on the win with a 12-pitch strikeout in the ninth to seal the victory.
The Johnnies open BIG EAST play with a three-game series starting Thursday afternoon at Seton Hall. First pitch from South Orange, N.J., is set for 1 p.m.
