St. John’s Splits on Opening Day of BIG EAST Match Play

Red Storm advances past Villanova on tiebreaker on Monday
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.– The St. John's men's golf team split on opening day of BIG EAST Match Play on Monday. The Red Storm fell in its first match to Butler, 5-2, before tying with Villanova, 3.5-3.5 and advancing on a tiebreaker.
The Johnnies move into tomorrow's fifth-place match against Creighton in the final round of the league's match play event after outlasting Villanova at Bear Lakes Country Club. Across the seven matches between the Red Storm and Wildcats the two sides were tied at 3.5 points apiece, but the Johnnies advance due to a larger margin of victory.
Brandon Sperling was the difference maker in the tiebreaker against Villanova, cruising past his opponent to win 5&4, leading by five holes as the contest was wrapped up with four to play. Tyler Clark was the other Johnnie to tally a win in the Johnnies' second match outlasting the Wildcats' Michael Vickers, 2&1 in West Palm Beach.
In its first tilt of the day, St. John's suffered a setback against Butler, 5-2. Peicheng Chen, who paced the squad with a 1-0-1 record on Monday, logged a 3&2 victory against the Bulldogs, closing out the matchup after being ahead by 3 through 16 holes. Douglas Beney grabbed the other point for the Red Storm dominating his first contest of the day, 5&4.
The Johnnies will play their final contest on Tuesday morning when they meet Creighton in the fifth-place match. Players will tee off beginning at 9 a.m. and live results will be available on Scoreboard by Clippd.
