Luis becomes first St. John’s player to make second team or better since Mark Jackson in 1987
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's men's basketball standout RJ Luis Jr. has been named Associated Press (AP) Second Team All-America, the outlet announced on Tuesday.
Â
Luis becomes the first St. John's player to earn AP All-America status since Metta Sandiford-Artest, formerly Ron Artest, who was a third team selection in 1999. The junior is also the first Johnnie to be named to the second team since Mark Jackson in 1987.
Â
The AP is one of four voting bodies that are recognized by the NCAA and in aggregate determine the consensus All-Americans. The AP, NABC, Sporting News and USBWA are the four recognized organizations, and the AP is the second of that quartet to release its selections. Luis was tabbed to the Sporting News Third Team All-America last week.
Â
Luis has put forth a star-effort during the historic 2024-25 season, leading the Red Storm to a 30-4 overall record which culminated with a BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Championship.
Â
An elite three-level scorer, Luis is averaging 18.4 points per game, which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST and has reached double-figures in 32 of his 33 appearances this season. Luis has logged 13 20-plus point outings, most recently a 29-point performance, that included 27 second half points, as the Red Storm overwhelmed Creighton in the latter stanza of the championship game to capture its first BIG EAST Tournament crown since 2000. Luis was presented with the Dave Gavitt Trophy as the BIG EAST Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Â
Luis became the first St. John's player since Walter Berry in 1986 to be named BIG EAST Player of the Year. The Miami native ranks first in the league with 10 double-doubles on the season and is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the conference.
Â
Luis will make his NCAA Tournament debut on Thursday when No. 2 St. John's takes on No. 15 Omaha at 9:45 p.m. from Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence. The live telecast will air on CBS with Andrew Catalon, Steve Lappas and Evan Washburn announcing the action from the Ocean State.
