Bobby Seel tallied four points in the loss for the Red Storm
MILWAUKEE – The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its BIG EAST opener to Marquette on Saturday, 13-8, at Valley Fields in Milwaukee.
The Johnnies (4-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) held the Golden Eagles to just five second-half goals but were unable to muster enough offense to take a victory in Wisconsin.
Bobby Seel led the Red Storm with a two-score, two-assist performance, extending his team-best point streak to 27 games, dating back to the 2023 season. The senior midfielder is third on the team with 15 goals, 13 assists and 28 points.
Adrian Nowak added a goal and a helper for his seventh multi-point effort of the season, giving him 34 points on the season. Rookies Jayson Cardenas and Ryan Ormond each found twine, while Brian Kelly added his 21st assist of the season, setting a new career best.
Defensive midfielder Nick Turrini scored his first career goal, and Dan Koban recorded his eighth tally of 2025.
Adam Dembicki had a strong day at the faceoff 'X', winning 12-23 draws and scoring the first goal of his two-year career. The Virginia native added four groundball pickups.
Defensively, Quinn Falasca forced his 18th turnover of 2025 and scooped a pair of groundballs. Dylan Lee also forced a turnover and picked up a loose ball. Patrick Scarborough made 12 saves between the pipes for his seventh straight game with double-digit saves.
Carsen Brandy and Bobby O'Grady each scored four times for Marquette (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST), while Matt Caputo had a goal and assist.
After Marquette scored the game's first two goals, Seel found Nowak on the doorstep, who finished the ally-oop to get St. John's on the board. A slashing penalty on Marquette put the Johnnies on a man-up and Cardenas ripped a shot into the upper corner just 11 seconds into the man-up opportunity, evening the score at two. Marquette netted two straight to make it 4-2 after the first 15 minutes.
The Johnnies got back within one, 4-3, when Turrini cleared the ball and took it all the way himself. After two more Marquette tallies, Seel found twine on a strong run from X to make it 6-4. The Golden Eagles answered at 4:29, but Koban took the ball in the slot and navigated traffic, finally finishing just outside the crease. One more Marquette score put the home team up three, 8-5, at the end of the first half.
The Red Storm started the second half on the right foot as Dembicki cleanly scooped the opening faceoff and found twine six seconds later. The Golden Eagles got the goal back three minutes later before Ormond capitalized on a turnover and scored on the open net. The Johnnies hit the post twice in the waning minutes of the third frame but were unable to break through, entering the final quarter down two, 9-7.
Marquette scored the first two goals of the final 15 minutes and kept the Johnnies off the board until the 2:38 mark when Seel scored his second of the day. Marquette scored a pair in the final minutes, closing out its win of conference play this season.
St. John's will return to action next Saturday when it welcomes No. 20/20 Denver to Queens. Faceoff from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium is set for 12 p.m.
