QUEENS, N.Y.– St. John's University will host a dedication ceremony on Saturday, April 5, to unveil the newly named Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium, the on-campus home of the St. John's men's and women's soccer and men's lacrosse programs.
Board of Trustees member, alumnus, and former three-year lacrosse captain Thomas Cox '82CBA will be honored on Saturday afternoon in recognition of the field dedication with a pre-game ceremony at approximately 11:40 a.m., prior to the St. John's lacrosse team's contest against Denver at 12 p.m.
"Tom and his wife, Celeste along with their children Tommy and Danielle, embody the Vincentian mission of St. John's University by giving back to their alma mater, helping those in need and never forgetting where they came from," said President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. "We are truly grateful to have Tom and Celeste as part of our St. John's family and are honored to have their family name etched on our campus as a part of our athletic facilities."
Inside the 2,168-seat multi-purpose venue, sits a newly engraved stone and signage in recognition of the Cox Family Field dedication. In recent years, the field turf stadium has undergone renovations including a brand-new videoboard, a state-of-the-art press box, and 100 new branded flex back seats for spectators, all enhancing the gameday experience for student-athletes and spectators.
Cox was a four-year member of the first Division I team and a three-year captain of the lacrosse program from 1979-82. The Long Island native graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1982 and went on to become a successful businessman. Cox currently serves as the CEO of OnPoint Group, LLC, part of Harvest Partners, a private equity firm based in Manhattan. He was honored at the St. John's University President's Dinner in 2022. His son, Tommy, played for the Johnnies' lacrosse team in 2011 and went on to graduate from the University in 2015 with a degree in public relations.
"Tom is the perfect example of what being a St. John's student-athlete is all about," Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed Kull said. "He took the lessons of being a student-athlete at St. John's to propel him into a successful career. He has since dedicated his life to creating the same opportunities for current and future generations of St. John's student-athletes."
Belson Stadium opened in the fall of 2002 and was primarily funded by a generous donation from the Belson Family. The idea for the stadium was hatched during a men's soccer trip to Italy, after Head Coach, Dr. Dave Masur, led the Red Storm to an NCAA Division I Men's Soccer National Championship in 1996. Accompanied by the Belson family overseas, the idea was to give the reigning national champions a home of their own. On February 1, 2001, the idea came to fruition as ground was broken with the very same shovel that was used to break ground on the first buildings on the Queens campus in the 1950s. Belson Stadium opened on September 21, 2002, as then-No. 1 ranked St. John's battled Wake Forest to a 1-1 draw in front of 2,242 fans.
Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium will be the home of all lacrosse games this season.
