No. 3 St. John’s Sweeps No. 6 Butler in BIG EAST Quarterfinals; Will Face No. 2 Xavier in Tomorrow’s Semifinal

The Johnnies have advanced to the semifinals in 10 straight conference tournaments
CAYCE, S.C. – The No. 3 St. John's women's tennis team earned a 5-0 shutout victory over No. 6 Butler on Friday in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals.
With the win, the Red Storm advances to the semifinals for the 10th-straight conference tournament under Head Coach Lauren Leo. The Johnnies will play second-seeded Butler tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center with a trip to the BIG EAST title match on the line.
St. John's (14-6, 5-1 BIG EAST) swept through doubles action before taking four solo matches, clinching the triumph in the first-ever BIG EAST Tournament matchup between the two programs.
Giulia Bizzari and Sandra Dzhambazov defeated Norah Balthazor and Lauren Cook, 6-2, on the No. 2 court to kick off partner play, before a 6-2 triumph by Alexandra Nielsen and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde over Jordan Schildcrout and Katie Beavin clinched the team point for St. John's.
Armed with a 1-0 lead, Dzhambazov carried her momentum into singles play, playing to a convincing straight-set 6-1, 6-2 win against Cook on the No. 5 court. On fourth flight, Charlotta Buss was victorious in her first-ever BIG EAST Tournament contest, besting Brooke Arington, 6-0, 6-2, giving the Johnnies a 3-0 advantage.
Babikova made it 4-0 on the No. 2 court, taking down Norah Balthazor, 6-2, 6-1, before Alicia Gomez's 13th singles victory of the season, a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Emma Beavin, finished off the sweep for St. John's.
Xavier bested Georgetown, 4-0, in Friday's quarterfinal to set up Saturday's meeting with the Red Storm. The Musketeers have advanced to 11 straight BIG EAST semifinals and are 12-8 overall this season.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools since Xavier earned a 4-1 victory in the 2023 semifinals.
