NEW YORK – St. John's softball's Ana Serafinko was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, while teammate Anese Thompson was tabbed to the weekly honor roll following St. John's series sweep of Villanova, the conference announced on Monday.
Serafinko was dominant inside the circle for the Johnnies this past week, going 2-0 with a 0.42 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. The left-hander started the week by tossing three clean innings of relief against Hofstra, striking out six batters and giving up one hit.
In the series opener against Villanova on Friday, Serafinko recorded 16 punchouts, giving up just one run on two hits in a dominant complete game performance to give St. John's a 3-1 victory. The Chino Hills, Calif., product helped the Johnnies complete the series sweep with a 5-2 win on Sunday by tossing another complete game, tallying 10 strikeouts and giving up two unearned runs on four hits.
Serafinko set the new BIG EAST single-season strikeout record during Sunday's showing, as she accumulated 137 punchouts and counting in conference play, breaking the previous mark of 132. The junior is also approaching Meghan Allman's single-season program record of 267 strikeouts with 260 punchouts overall in 2025.
The pitcher of the week honor marks the fourth this season for Serafinko, who becomes the first Red Storm player to win the award four times in a single season. Dating back to last season, Serafinko has won the award five times, marking the most for a career in St. John's history.
Thompson picks up her first selection to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season after leading the offense by going 7-for-11 (.636) with three runs scored, one double, one home run and two RBIs. The senior made the most of her final homestand in Queens, notching a hit in every contest this week, including multiple hits in each contest of the series with Villanova.
In Friday's doubleheader against the Wildcats, the catcher started the day going 2-for-3 with a double before following it up with another two-hit performance, including a two-run home run in the latter contest.
The nod to the conference's weekly honor roll marks the third of Thompson's career and the first since the 2023 season. The Ventura, Calif., native is now batting .274 with six doubles, four homers and 23 RBIs this season.
Serafinko, Thompson and the rest of the Red Storm will look ahead to the final weekend of the regular season when it travels to UConn for a three-game series that will decide the BIG EAST Regular Season Champion and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Championships. The series is set to begin on Friday at 7 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
