AMHERST, Va. – St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen battled through torrential rain during the NCAA Regionals Second Round on Monday afternoon.
Chen logged a 4-over, 74, in the middle round at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst, Va. Through 36 holes, the senior holds a cumulative score of 4-over, 144, to tie for 33rd place on the leaderboard. Amongst the 10 individual competitors, Chen ranks third after the first two rounds.
Through the first five holes of the afternoon, Chen delivered three pars and two bogeys to jump to 2-over for the tournament.
On the sixth hole, a 564-yard par 4, he striped one onto the fairway before nailing his iron shot onto the green. As the rain down poured, he received a free release as puddles formed on the green. With a straight-on look, the senior sunk the putt for his first birdie of the day.
After rattling off pars on seven and eight, he bogeyed the ninth hole to finish the front with a 2-over, 37. The All-BIG EAST First Team selection was strong off the tee hitting 5-of-6 fairways.
Heading into the latter half of the round Chen remained steady as the precipitation got heavier and heavier, rattling off six consecutive pars, including an impressive save on the 15th.
After a bogey on the next hole, Chen fired an iron within 10-feet of the pin on the 240-yard par-3 17th but the birdie chance missed just wide and he tallied a par. The Beijing, China native bogeyed the final
The final round of the NCAA Amherst Regional is expected to begin tomorrow morning. Live results will be available throughout the tournament on SCOREBOARD.
