St. John’s Sits in Third Place After Day Two of the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The Red Storm has tallied 37.5 total points
STORRS, Conn. – The St. John's track & field team completed its second day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by JEEP at the Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn.
The team currently sits in third place after earning 37.5 points across five events. UConn is in first place with 117.5 points, while DePaul is second with 45 total tallies.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji posted the first gold medal of the Johnnies' weekend, winning the long jump. The junior dazzled with a personal-record 6.02-meter leap, earning the squad 10 points in the process. Linn Hertz joined Lemus-Sodji on the podium, notching a bronze medal on a season-best 5.94-meter jump.
Jamora Alves staked a silver medal in the shot put. The Grenada native recorded a toss of 15.24 meters for second place and eight points at the conference championship. Juliet Smith earned St. John's a tally with a 12.52-meter heave for an eighth-place finish.
In the pole vault, Berit Friedenbach tied her career-record of 3.62 meters for fourth place in the event, adding five points to the Red Storm's total. Virginia Lloret took fifth place on a vault of 3.47 meters for 3.5 points. Colette Metcalf produced a season-best leap of 3.47 meters, placing eighth for a point.
Danella Dawkins and Jerese Allwood both qualified for tomorrow's 100-meter hurdle finals. Dawkins finished in second place on a season-best mark of 14.10 seconds, while Allwood grabbed the final spot with a 15.19-second finish.
Three Johnnies moved onto the 400-meter finals. In the preliminary round, Chinenye Onuorah posted a first-place and season-record mark of 53.37 seconds. Leilani Robinson placed third on a personal-best 54.90 second finishing time. Jalen Jackson ended her day in sixth on a personal-record pace of 55.04 seconds.
Onuorah qualified for her second event final on Thursday, this time in the 200-meter dash. The junior from Thailand posted a 23.98-second effort for third in the preliminary round. Jackson will also take part in the 200-meter dash finals tomorrow, finishing the prelim in 24.31 seconds.
Lemus-Sodji will take part in tomorrow's 100-meter dash finals, after finishing Friday's preliminary round with a career-best 11.83-second finish for second place.
In the 800-meter prelims, Nora Haugen and Naiara Garcia locked up their spots in Saturday's final round. Haugen finished in second place with a finishing time of 2:09.38, while Garcia logged a season-best mark of 2:11.42 for seventh.
Djassi Dean, Maddie Kelso-Heap and Ciara Wiltshire all qualified for the 400-meter hurdle finals after strong finishes in the prelims. Dean came in third place on a personal-best 1:00.88, followed by Kelso-Heap who placed seventh on a career-record 1:01.92 effort. Wiltshire was the final Johnnie to advance to the finals, posting a personal-record 1:03.72 mark.
The Red Storm will close out the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by JEEP tomorrow. The final day of the league championships is set to kick off at 10 a.m. on FloTrack with the women's discus.
