The Red Storm won five events in Staten Island
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team enjoyed five event wins and 18 top-five finishes in Staten Island at the Big Apple Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Juliet Smith continued to build on her strong indoor season, winning the weight throw with a season-best heave of 16.63 meters (54 feet, 7 inches). With that mark, the Jamaican moves into third in the conference. Teammate Desiree Pagan's season-best throw of 15.75 meters (51 feet, 8 inches) lifted her to a second place finish behind Smith.
Also in the ring, Maja Henry registered a season best of her own in the shot put with a toss of 12.34 meters (40 feet, 5.75 inches) to win the shot put on her final attempt. The junior sits ninth on the league's performance list. Smith placed second with a season-best 11.88 meters (38 feet, 11.75 inches).
Seniors Fia Viklund and Cassandra Lemus-Sodji each won their respective jumping events. Viklund's leap of 12.10 meters (39 feet, 8.50 inches) in the triple jump was enough to win back-to-back weeks in the discipline. Lemus-Sodji recorded a 5.85-meter (19 feet, 2.25 inches) jump to finish atop the standings in the long jump.
Ashley Sadler claimed the top spot in the high jump, clearing a 1.66-meter (5 feet, 5.25 inches) bar on her first attempt. The mark currently sits fifth in the BIG EAST. Just behind Sadler was fellow Johnnie Ruth Smith, who cleared a 1.65-meter (5 feet, 3.25 inches) bar on her final attempt.
On the track, Karese Clivesha Kezia Lloyd was the top collegiate finisher in the 60-meter dash, clocking a time of 7.76 seconds, good enough for second place. Lemus-Sodji finished right on Lloyd's heels with a time of 7.77 to claim the final podium spot.
Lloyd also claimed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 25.31. Djassi Dean finished seventh, stopping the clock in 25.93.
Jerese Allwood and Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong made the 60-meter hurdles final, with Allwood placing third. The sophomore's personal-best time of 8.89 ranks fifth all-time in
program history and seventh in the BIG EAST. Forbes-Agyepong finished right behind Allwood, clocking 9.11 seconds.
St. John's turns its attention to a pair of meets in Boston next weekend. On Friday, Feb. 13, the Johnnies will head to Harvard for the Harvard Crimson Classic at the Gordon Indoor Track. The following day, the squad remains in Beantown for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at the BU Track and Tennis Center.
