The Pride scored a pair of goals in the opening 11 minutes at Captains Field
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.– The St. John's men's soccer team (1-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) dropped its Sunday night contest at No. 23 Hofstra (1-1, CAA) at Captains Field. The Pride netted a pair of early goals just 3:06 apart in the first 11 minutes of the game and never looked back to claim a home victory on Long Island.
The Red Storm outshot The Pride, 7-_6 on Sunday night at Captains Field, including accounting for seven of the contests final 11 strikes.
Luca Fargnoli paced the Johnnies with a pair of shot attempts while Xavi Abeijon, Antonio Biggs, Guilherme Gomes, Andrew Porucznik and Jeremy Sharp tallied one strike each.
In the eighth minute, Hofstra earned a penalty kick as Laurie Goddard converted from the spot to give the home side an early, 1-0 advantage at Captains Field. Just 3:36 later, The Pride doubled its lead off a left-footed strike from Daniel Burko to grab a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute.
The Red Storm pushed offensively to climb back registering the game's next four shots. Hofstra maintained its early lead heading into the dressing room, 2-0. The two teams were knotted in shot attempts after the opening 45 minutes, 4-4.
In the second half, Biggs orchestrated a chance quickly heading a cross towards goal before it was smothered by Hofstra goalkeeper Sean Bohan in the 49th minute. The Red Storm generated an opportunity once again in the 60th minute after Fargnoli received a pass from Godwin Partey, made the turn and launched a drive that sailed high and right.
Gomes provided the most threatening chance of the evening. The freshman midfielder launched a strike off a back pass from Jad Benjelloun four outside the 18-yard box. The look on goal was tapped over the bar by Bohan in the 69th minute.
The Johnnies looked continued to battle over the final 20 minutes but were unable to generate another shot as Hofstra clung onto its early lead to secure a victory.
