Guilherme Gomes Explodes for Four Goals as St. John’s Routs New Hampshire, 5-0

Gomes breaks school freshman record; becomes second St. John’s player to score four or more goals in a single-game
QUEENS, N.Y.– History was made on Thursday night as Guilherme Gomes became just the second player in program history and the first-ever freshman to score four or more goals in a single-game as St. John's blasted New Hampshire, 5-0, in the home opener.
Gomes, who recorded a hat-trick just 6:13 apart in the first 34 minutes into the first half moved to third all-time in single-game goals (4) and points (8). After tallying his fourth of the night, Sao Paulo, Brazil native becomes the first player to record four goals and eight points in a match since Fred Bischoff on Oct. 23, 1982.
The rookie in just his third collegiate match becomes ties for the NCAA Division I-lead in points and goals in a single-game and converted on four of his six shot attempts (.667). He becomes the first BIG EAST player to record four goals in a single-game since Creighton's Duncan McGuire in 2022.
Luca Fargnoli added the other Johnnies goal with a highlight reel blast from outside-the-box. The sophomore from Long Island recorded his first collegiate goal as the Red Storm netted four over a 10:11 span just 37:27 into the match.
Jeremy Sharp, Antonio Biggs, Gabin Thomelier and Godwin Partey all tallied assists on Gomes' goals as St. John's racked 14 total points on the evening.
Alec McLachlan recorded his second complete shutout in the first three matches of the season grabbing onto two saves for St. John's in the dominant win at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm's 5-0 triumph marked its largest margin of victory in a home opener since it won by the same scoreline at Belson Stadium over FDU on Sept. 10, 2010. The five-goal difference was the Johnnies' largest in any game since they routed Temple, 7-1, on Sept. 11, 2023.
The Johnnies outshot the Wildcats, 19-3, tallying 19 of the game's final 21 shots in a dominant performance in Queens.
Just eight minutes into the match, New Hampshire created a threatening opportunity as the Wildcats' Max Voigt directing a header on frame before McLachlan made a miraculous diving save save at the doorstep.
After Gabe Smyth drew a foul that was reviewed and determined to be a penalty, Gomes was stepped up to the penalty spot. The freshmen hesitated then rocketed a strike into the right side of the twine to put the Red Storm in front in the 28th minute, 1-0.
In the 32nd minute, Ivar Nå Aga tossed a throw-in to Sharp, who preceded to play a swinging ball into the box as Gomes turned it home firing a header into the top right corner to double the Johnnies advantage, 2-0.
Just over two minutes later, the hat trick was complete as Gomes received a pass towards the sideline from Thomelier. The midfielder wound up and launched a high-arching strike that spiraled over the head of the Wildcats' goalkeeper. With his third tally over just 6:11, he became the 24th player in program history to record a hat trick and just the second in the last 21 years.
The goals just kept coming as the Red Storm attack remained relentless toward the latter part of the first half. After winning back possession, Fargnoli dribbled his way past the defense unleashing a ball from near the endline that flew into the crossbar and bounced into the back of the net. The first career goal marked the Johnnies fourth tally over just a 10:11 span as it sprinted out to a commanding 4-0 advantage.
The Red Storm carried its commanding 4-0 lead into the locker room courtesy of Gomes' three goals.
In the second half, Partey intercepted a Wildcats' pass turning the possession the other way and deked his way through five UNH defenders in impressive fashion cutting past two with a pullback for a highlight-reel play.
As the second half continued on, St. John's earned a corner kick. After the ball rattled out to midfield, Partey played it over to Biggs, the captain then one-timed it into the box as it was Gomes once again. The rookie got onto a bouncing ball in the box volleying it into the back of the net to complete his record-breaking night.
With the win, Dr. Dave Masur moves to 25-4-6 all-time in home openers in Queens.
The Red Storm will look to keep the momentum going on Sunday when it meets No. 5 Wake Forest at Spry Stadium at 7 p.m.
