St. John’s to Host Home Opener against Youngstown State on Sunday

Red Storm is fresh off a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph’s off Mariani’s game-winner
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team (1-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) readies for its home opener on Sunday afternoon when it welcomes Youngstown State (1-4, 0-0 Horizon) for a 1 p.m. kick-off at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Admission is free for all fans into all women's soccer home games and all St. John's students in attendance will receive free ice cream. Sunday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Kevin Connelly and Cam Manna on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm is coming off a 1-0 victory on Sunday over Saint Joseph's at Sweeney Field in Philadelphia. Madison Marianinetted her first collegiate goal, dicing through the Hawks' backline firing a strike into the right side of the twine in the 66th minute. The sophomore's tally was decisive as the Johnnies' defense locked it down over the last 24 minutes of action to earn their first win of 2025.
Kayla Bower recorded a career-high five saves in the City of Brotherly Love logging the first complete game shutout of her tenure in Queens. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native has made nine stops and holds a 0.50 GAA through two matches.
Mariani and Bower were both to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, marking the first time the Red Storm have had multiple players recognized by the league since Sept. 15, 2024.
St. John's enters Sunday match with a five-game winning streak in home openers, dating back to spring 2021 season. The Red Storm will face Youngstown State for the first time ever in its 38-year history.
Youngstown State arrives with 1-4 record on the year playing a national schedule under first-year Head Coach Rich Wall. After dropping their first three matches to a trio of power four opponents in Indiana, then-No. 25 Texas Tech and Missouri, the Penguins blanked St. Bonaventure for their first win of the year. Last night, Youngstown State was defeated by Kent State, 5-1.
The Red Storm will play four of its next five matches at home and will host Columbia on Thursday at 7 p.m. following Sunday's home opener.
