Jaylen Vallecillo Tallies Brace as St. John’s Draws FDU, 2-2

Vallecillo scores her first two collegiate goals 8:44 apart on Thursday
QUEENS, N.Y.- Jaylen Vallecillo recorded a brace as the St. John's women's soccer team (2-3-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) drew with FDU (0-5-2, 0-0-0 NEC) on Thursday afternoon, 2-2.
The Red Storm took a 2-0 advantage before the Knights quickly tied with a pair of goals to equalize just 2:44 apart.
The freshmen, Vallecillo recorded a brace tallying the first two goals of her collegiate career just 8:44 apart. The local product from Queens logged the first multi-goal outing for the Johnnies this season.
Snæfríður Eva Eiríksdóttir recorded the assist off a free kick on Vallecillo's first tally. On the second goal from the rookie forward, Julia Lombardo and Madison Mariani logged helpers.
The Red Storm have recorded 14 points (five goals, four assists) on the season and 13 of those points have been tallied by underclassmen.
The Knights recorded goals from Maria Barrerro while the other tally was an own goal.
After the Knights logged the first four shot attempts of the game, the Red Storm engineered its first attack of the afternoon on the counter. Daniela Monzon and Madison Mariani carried the combination play looking for space for a strike. Mariani finally broke free and lifted one towards net before it was halted by the FDU goalkeeper.
In the 27th minute, the Knights fired one on frame that spiraled on frame before Bower made a great grab to keep the score level.
With 1:01 remaining the opening half, St. John's earned a free kick. Eiríksdóttir delivered a ball into the box. Vallecillo beat her defender to the incoming pass getting a head on it as the shot flew into the far side of the net in the 44th minute. The Red Storm carried the one-goal advantage into the locker room.
In the latter half, the Red Storm doubled its lead in the 53rd minute. Mariani won possession right outside the box and played a back pass to Lombardo, who lobbed on into the box. Vallecillo popped a header high into the air that fell into the top of the net, 2-0.
The Knights responded with two quick goals in a three-minute stretch to equalize the game in the 68th minute.
As FDU sought out a game-winner Kayla Bower saved the game in the 88th minute making a diving stop. Samantha Goldberg had the final opportunity putting a 20-yard strike on frame but it was halted as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Prior to the game, the St. John's Athletic Department honored all those lost in the tragedies of September 11, 2001. Campus Minister for Athletics Fr. Richard Rock gave a pre-game prayer as St. John's ROTC presented our nation's colors.
The Johnnies will be close their non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon when they host Boston College at 3 p.m.
