Kayla Bower logs shutout as Red Storm shut down the Eagles’ high-octane offense
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's Women's Soccer team (2-3-2, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) halted the high-octane Boston College (4-1-3, 0-0-0 ACC) in a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Eagles came into the match averaging 2.4 goals per game through seven contests and were shutout by the Red Storm backline.
Kayla Bower logged the shutout effort making four saves on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native recorded four saves for the fifth time this season. The senior captain has made 31 stops this season
As the two teams felt each other out, Samantha Goldberg had the first and best opportunity of the opening half heading a corner from Madison Mariani. The redshirt freshmen's look on goal was batted over the crossbar. Mariani has logged 10 of her team-leading 11 shots on target this season.
Janelle Sylvestre had the second look on target in the opening 45 minutes. The sophomore blasted one from the left wing on frame before it was caught by the Eagles' goalkeeper.
The Red Storm and Eagles went into the locker room all square at 0-0.
In the 57th minute, Bower made a leaping stop batting the ball over the bar to keep the game level.
After the Eagles earned a free kick right outside the box, the Red Storm wall came up with a big block in the 81st minute to swing the momentum.
Daniela Monzon had the final opportunity to separate the Johnnies and Eagles launching a strike from 20 yards out before it was stopped in its tracks by Olivia Shippee in 88th minute. The two battled till the end for a scoreless draw.
The Red Storm finished non-conference competition with a 2-3-2 record and will begin BIG EAST play on Saturday night when it meets UConn in Storrs at 7 p.m.
