The Red Storm will play four games from Sept. 12 – 14
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball program (0-6, 0-0 BIG EAST) will play their first games in Carnesecca Arena for the 2025 season this weekend, as they host the 11th Annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic from Sept. 12 – 14. The Red Storm will be one of five programs to play in the eight-match round-robin, as Marist, West Virginia, Delaware State and Tennessee will make their way to Queens.
After opening the season with a 12-day road trip, Head Coach Joanne Persico and her squad begin their four-game home slate against Marist on Friday at noon. Later that day, the Red Storm will take on former BIG EAST member West Virginia at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Johnnies square off with Delaware State at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday afternoon the team closes out the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic against the Lady Volunteers of Tennessee at 1 p.m. All of St. John's matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
Coming off an OUTRIGGER Invitational All-Tournament Team selection, senior Erin Jones looks to continue her high level of play. The Albuquerque, N.M., native is posting 3.10 kills per set, 2.14 assists per set and 2.48 digs per set through six games. She also paces the team in seven service aces.
St. John's kicks off the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic against Marist (1-5, 0-0 MAAC). Last season, Taylor Miller was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team for her first-year efforts. The outside hitter collected 314 kills and 47 digs last season and has followed it up with 11 kills so far through her first three matches. Friday's match will be the fifth all-time meeting between the Johnnies and the Red Foxes. The last time out, the Red Storm came out on top of a 3-0 decision back on Aug. 27, 2005.
Marist and Delaware play the middle match at 3:30 p.m.
To end the night, St. John's face former conference foe West Virginia (6-0, 0-0 Big 12). Last season, head coach Jen Greeny began her tenure as the leader of the volleyball program. Greeny was previously the head coach of Washington State, and brings a 355-220 overall record with her to Morgantown, W. Va. In her first season, West Virginia finished with an 8-21 overall record. The last time out against the Mountaineers, the Red Storm fell in a 3-0 decision back on Nov. 6, 2011.
On Saturday, Delaware St. and Tennessee kick off day two of the Kaiser Classic at 12 p.m.
St. John's will take on Delaware St. (3-4, 0-0 MEAC) for the middle match. The Hornets finished the 2024 season with a 17-14 record and the MEAC volleyball title. After defeating Howard University in five sets, they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. Delaware St. would fall to the eventual national champions of Penn St. in straight sets. This season, the Hornets were selected to finish second in the MEAC preseason coaches' poll, with two points separating them and Howard. Outside hitter Gerren Tomlin was selected to the Preseason All-MEAC Team. The team is coming off a loss to Maryland on Wednesday night in 3-0 decision.
West Virginia and Marist will conclude play on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
To wrap up their portion of the Kaiser Classic, the Red Storm meet Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Volunteers (5-1, 0-0 SEC) are fresh from pulling off an upset of No. 21 Georgia Tech on Tuesday night in a 3-1 victory in Rocky Top. After a 15-12 record last season, Tennessee fell to Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This season, Eve Rackham Watt and her squad were selected to finish sixth in the SEC preseason coaches' poll. Setter Caroline Kerr was selected to the Preseason All-SEC Team. In the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) coaches' poll, the Lady Vols continue to receive votes for the second week in a row. This will be the first all-time meeting between the St. John's and Tennessee.
