QUEENS, N.Y.- Fueled by an Erin Jones triple-double, the St. John's volleyball program (1-6, 0-0 BIG EAST) cruised to a 3-0 victory over Marist (1-6, 0-0 MAAC) to begin the 11th annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic on Friday afternoon. The scores of the sets were 25-11, 25-22 and 25-19.
As a team, the Johnnies hit over .300 for the match as six different players recorded a kill. The Red Storm notched a season high seven total team blocks.
Jones, who broke the BIG EAST record in triple-doubles in conference play in 2024 posted her first of the season at Carnesecca Arena. The senior tallied 15 kills to lead St. John's, adding 11 assists and 10 digs in the convincing win over the Red Foxes.
Martina Capponcelli recorded a game-high 19 assists and Rashanny Solano Smith collected a team-best 12 digs.
To start the first set, teams would exchange points up to 3-3. The Red Storm would jump out to a two-point advantage courtesy of a Kendall White kill and a Jones ace. The Johnnies would hold onto the advantage, until a 3-1 run capitalized by blocks from Lucrezia Lodi and Kya Harris forced a Red Fox timeout at 15-11. The stoppage was not enough to extinguish the home team's 10-0 run to convincingly take the first set, 25-11.
Mirroring the first frame, the second frame would start with teams going back-and-forth to 3-3. St. John's would begin a 5-1 run highlighted by service aces from Lodi and Solano Smith, forcing the Red Foxes to take their first timeout of the set. The timeout thwarted the Johnnies run, and a successful coaches' challenge by Marist brought the score to 8-6, in favor of the Red Storm. The squads would trade points until the home teams lead would grow to five on back-to-back Jones kills at 14-9, forcing a Marist timeout. The visitors used the timeout to kickstart a 4-1 run of their own. At 16-13, Lodi tooled the Red Fox block bringing her kill total to eight. The home team's lead would start to dwindle on a 3-0 Red Fox run, but Chloe Bell would rattle off two kills and St. John's up for good, winning the set 25-22.
The Red Foxes came out swinging to begin the third stanza, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. Ella Parker and Bell would reject an attack to bring the Red Storm within two. The home team would erase the lead and go up one at 7-6 on a kill from Jones. The Red Foxes and Johnnies would exchange scores to 11-11. Later in the frame, Jones would come out of a timeout and fire off three kills in separate occasions to help give the home team the lead at 16-15, forcing a visitor's timeout. As another back-and-forth began, the Red Storm would go on a 6-2 capped off with a Bell and White block at 22-19. St. John's would end the match on a 3-0 run, to take the final set 25-19.
The Red Storm are back in action later tonight as the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic continues when they take on West Virginia at 7 p.m.
